TacomaGeneral discussion forum for the 2005 and later Toyota Tacoma.
This is a discussion thread titled "Tacoma 4x4 limited slip vs. Lockers", within the Tacoma forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
Okay...I bought a Taco 4x4 w/TRD Package. It comes with a limited slip differential. I think its only on the rear. I was wanting to put lockers front and rear. I wanted to know if lockers would be better than limited slip or not? If so, would you guys recomend electronic or air lockers?

It really depends on what you plan on doing with it. If you are just driving it back and forth to work, with a occasional shoot through a ranch field or whatever, youd be best to put your money into other things first. But if you are doing some serious rock climbing or whatever then a locker would be a wise move. I have the factory locker in my truck and I've only needed it once when I was stuck bad. It was bad enough where the locker didnt make a bit of difference. (always remove the hitch drawbar before hitting a mud hole...) Otherwise I've just toyed around with it just to make sure the thing actually kicked in.
Personally Id modify other things first, if that LSD starts limiting your fun then change it.
just my 2 dollars (2 cents dont do much nowadays, especially in the tank...)
Congrats on your truck!

Reason: congrats
The locker will provide quite a bit more traction than a limited slip. In my 67 FJ40 I had a locker in the rear and limited slip up front because LSD don't affect steering as much as an automatic locker. For the most part the LSD worked fine, but it would deffinetly allow a wheel to spin freely in some more difficult trails. I have now ditched the LSD for another locker and it has greatly improved traction. For now I would stick to the LSD in the rear until you get stuck the first time. To bad you didn't get the TRD Off-Road because it comes with the manual locker in the rear and then a LSD up front would probably be ideal to make your truck a daily driver/weekend warrior. I would add a LSD upfront if you plan on doing anything serious off road. If you choose to later swap the rear to a locker you could, but in the mean time you would have a traction aid on both ends.

Yeah I didnt know about the Offroad package until after the fact. I also didnt know there is a lsd for the front available. Very helpful thanks.
Your Tacoma will be more than capable of playing in the sand stock. Plenty of power and it is a fairly light truck. I took mine to Pismo and not once did I lock the rear diff and I had no trouble following a Hummer H1. Take it out, I bet you will be happy with it's performance off road. The rocks or deep mud is really going to be the only place you were wishing for a locker. I personally wouldn't take my truck on rocks because it is my daily driver and wouldn't want to risk the body damage. As for Mud I don't even take my very built FJ40 through mud because it is a pain to clean and really not the best to have caked all over your under body/drive train.
ARB is the only traction aide I am aware of that fit's in the Tacoma's IFS. Which is not a bad choice because it is a manual locker, but pricey. With the FJ Cruiser, more after market lockers/limited slips may be made to fit the IFS shared in both vehicles.
I don't believe there's an LSD available for the 7.5" toyota front diffs. Only lockers.
In any case, you could go with the Toyota TRD locker but, you'd have to replace your complete rear axle and get the wiring for all of it. Other option for selectable lockers, as Marrazito stated, is the ARB and they are pricey.
Personally, ultimately, I'd go with a Detroit Locker in the rear. If I still had the 7.5" diff in the front, a full time locker with manual locking hubs or ARB.

Hey... I just realized you are from Co Co County, I am assuming that is Contra Costa. I am in Dublin, My 40 is currently going through some changes but I am going to the Con in August. It will be a 97 Jeep TJ on 37's locked front and rear, a 68 Bronco on 35's open diffs a 72 FJ40 on 35's locked in the rear and Me in my 67 40 ON 35's locked front and rear. Your more than welcome to join, we usually go in one way and come out on the same side because most of tow up.
