TacomaGeneral discussion forum for the 2005 and later Toyota Tacoma.
This is a discussion thread titled "TRD cai vs. URD cai", within the Tacoma forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
Both of those intakes will probably give you the best performance. You may also want to look at the AFE intake. From what I have heard, AFE makes the TRD, everything looks the same, but the AFE is usually a bit cheaper. Also, I have seen that the AFE has this little cutout in the bottom corner of the box, almost like a drain incase water gets in there, I have heard the TRD does not have that. With the URD, there is no protection against water, although I have not heard that this is an issue. Also with this intake, I believe you have to run the URD AFR sensor calibrator which is another $200+, so you would be better off going with the TRD or AFE intake in my opinion.
I bought the AFE CAI with Pro Dry S Filter direct from the AFE Website. This was when it first came out though. You might be able to find it somewhere else for cheaper.

I bought my AFE on ebay brand new in the box free shipping for $317.00. There are two versions the Cx and the Si. The Cx is identical to the TRD, the Si has the auxilery scoop. The reason they added the scoop was because the Cx uses the same air inlet as stock and you could make the case that not much more air is actually making it's way to the intake. The Cx and the TRD will both add power, but I went with the Si and I love it. Sounds great too!

The TRD was dynoed on ct and the guy actually lost hp. The URD tcai is good for about 15 hp, and imo is better at keeping water out of the engine. I have the volant (don't buy it, total pos) with a custom ram air attachment. I have mud and water come in from the stock location, but none from the ram at the front of the truck in knee deep muck. Go figure. I wish I would have got the urd intake. Maybe I can sell the volant to some dummy like me and get the urd later. You guys want to buy a volant? lol.
Ive got the K&N CAI and it is awesome. Sounds great and noticeable power increase. If you buy it from a store they go for $330 but I got mine on ebay for $215 +$20 shipping, brand new! The only issue I had was that the heat shield mounting bolts they sent me were the wrong size and I was missing a screw on one hose clamp but not a huge deal. I just used the stock screws from the original air box to bolt down the heat shield and I replaced the missing hose clamp screw.
