TacomaGeneral discussion forum for the 2005 and later Toyota Tacoma.
This is a discussion thread titled "New Taco vs. 1st gen Tundra", within the Tacoma forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
I currently have a '99 ext cab Prerunner. Absolutely love this truck, but I have twins on the way.
My wife has a '06 Ford Exploder, so baby duty will be with her ride most of the time, but there's no way I can fit two car seats in to my Taco.
Since I mostly ride alone, I don't think i need a DC, but definitely am looking at an Access Cab. I occasionally tow a race car (been using my dad's F-250 diesel for this) and only commute about 10 miles.
Anyway, looking at a newer Taco or an early Tundra. How does the interior space of the back seat in these two compare. What about acceleration and towing, MPG for the 4.7 vs the 4.0?
I recently had a similar delima. Taco access cab vs Tundra access cab. Kids are 2 & 6 & I went with the Taco. Unless you are under about 5'9" Go with the Tundra. I'm 6'0" & with a booster & forward facing carseat it works, but with rear facing seats no way.

I agree. I am 6'2", and there is no way I could fit a rear facing child seat behind the drivers seat in my DC taco. When we had a rear facing seat installed last year, it had to go behind the passenger seat.
Booster & forward facing seats is what we have now, and that works fine.
i had a 2000 tundra access cab v8 4x4 and now have an 07 tacoma 4x4 double cab.
gas mileage 19.2 average Taco, 14.8 Tundra
acceleration. Taco is faster, but the tundras acceleration feels faster.
Towing. The tundra feels more substantial and towed more effortlessly.
The tacoma handles better, the tundra seemed to have a smoother ride.
the dc taco has a useable rear seat, not so in the access cab tundra. In the front the tundra has more room though, and a more upright seating position.
Looking at the specs, they are similar, but the tundra really felt more substantial and solid. However, the tacoma is faster, gets much better gas mileage, and easily handles towing my harley or atv trailer with ease.
FWIW,
The back seat in the 1st gen Tundra AC was not much bigger than the Taco. It WAS enuf to make a difference, but I think it would be tight with rear facing seats if you were anywhere near six feet. The Tundra I was looking at rode MUCH worse unless the road was very smooth, granted it had 30k vs 3k on my Taco, but that extra 500# of payload has to exact some price.
I am 6' tall, and have an '07 Double Cab. I have 3 carseats in the backseat and they all fit without problems. The rear-facing carseat is in the middle and it fits fine. It fits because of the extra space between the buckets. It wouldnt fit if it was placed on either side. I can say there is a LOT more room in the DC than there was in my Audi A4 that I traded in for the truck.
I'm leaning towards the Tundra. Looks like it's more in my price range and I didn't mention that I have two older kids (9 and 12) that I get every other weekend.
Can anyone tell me off-hand if trying to find a TRD model is worth it (did they offer it in 2wd with a push button locker like my prerunner), or should i just plan on swapping in new shocks and springs on a high mileage Tundra.

thanks,

I have a 2000 AC Tundra 2wd with the TRD package and I do not have a locking diff. I think a LSD was made an option by Toyota in '01 or '02.
I've put a forward facing car seat in the rear of my Access Cab, the babies feet rest on the centre console area. I really don't see how it would work with two seats back there because the driver's seat would probaby have to move forward or the kid's feet would have to be up in the air.
I'd go with a DC Taco or DC Tundra instead of AC.
__________________ The Tundra is a good single guy's truck. Its pretty, it doesn't rattle too much and its fast. Now I just need to find a woman who matches in all those respects.
I have an 07 Taco AC 4x4 and I had an 00 Tundra AC 4x4. The Tundra is probably a little bit better fit in the rear seat dept, but it'll get a bit worse mileage, due to the V8 and I think it's a little heavier. Mine rode and drove more like a Lexus than a pickup. It also towed pretty well. I had the TRD pkg and while it was nice, the '00s didn't have rear locker or LSD - it was too easy to spin the right rear tire. My only gripe with that truck was the brakes. If they would have fixed them, I'd have kept it.
My TRD Offroad Taco is lots better offroad and rides similarly onroad. I haven't speed tested the taco, but the one time I had to get on it, it seemed to move pretty well.
