TacomaGeneral discussion forum for the 2005 and later Toyota Tacoma.
This is a discussion thread titled "ECU Replacement required???", within the Tacoma forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
The other day after not using my truck for about a week, I took off and had the engine light come on. After visiting the dealer to clear the code, here is what they told me the code was; Right from my bill "P2610. Internal engine off timer code, Recommended repair is ECU replacement". I am still under warranty, so i am making them replace it, (regular cost #1135.10 in Canuck bucks.) Any comments/anybody had this? I am an 05 with 141000km.
A P2610 is definitely a "ECU MALFUNCTION'. I haven't seen or heard too many 'ECU' failures of the 05-07 series Tacoma's. The 'engine off timer code' is interesting though... I'm wondering if the timer that logs the 'engine time' has failed and has flagged a P2610 code; or the 'engine timer' has failed due to a malfunctioning ECU. The dealer will probably just replace the ECU and that will be the end of it; however, if you find out any additional info please let us know.

The main reason I pushed for an ECU replacement was a noticieable dip in gas mileage from 17/18 to 14/15 since they reset my code. I assumed that maybe the VVTI was relearning my hard driving habits, but I will post if anything new develops.

Do you have a list of trouble codes? I've only recently downloaded one and the highest code on the list is P1780?
Regarding the "Internal Engine Off Timer" though, I know an emmisions concern is unburned fuel after the engine is turned off. I wonder if it's monitoring the injectors allowing fuel in the cylinder after you turn the engine off.
Sure like to know if you get a chance to talk to the mechanic.
I don't believe the ECU learning curve is that steep after a reset. The ECU malfunction has probably caused something else not to function correctly(fuel delivery, air to fuel mixtures,etc...) The VVT-i or the ECT-i really doesn't make changes after a reset or for that matter... during different driving techniques or styles.

Thanks.
