TacomaGeneral discussion forum for the 2005 and later Toyota Tacoma.
This is a discussion thread titled "Wheels on SR5 2WD access cab", within the Tacoma forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
The EPA rates them the same, I myself just figure it will get a little less in the real world. The diff ratio is offset by the taller tires, quite a bit taller in the case of the 215/70-15's that are on the reg 2WD's. 210lbs is not hurting MPG much, just like having a passenger in the right seat, The high stance is prob the worst thing for mileage, but the front skid plate seems like it would make a smooth flow underneath, but the reg 2WD's may have this too, I havn't looked underneath one since the 05 body change. Have driven mine several times to my FL property from mid GA, and speeds of mostly 65-70 and lots of little towns @ 35-55, and approx 60 miles of interstate @ 80 has netted 21.5 to 23.2 over the 350-365 mile run (slightly differing routes), A/C always on even in cooler weather due to humidity, but of course A/C cycles more in cool wheather. 19-22 MPG around town, mostly 2-4 mile short trips twice a day. I run front tires at 35 and rears at 29-30 unless I carry a heavy load. If you prefer the reg small chassis A/Cab then all means get it, I was just bringing up that the PreRunner is a good buy for the little extra money, and some people automatically think they are several thousand $$ more. They DO have more options available that can raise price a bit. Let us know what you wind up getting, and good luck with whatever you decide upon.

Not sure about X-Runners but other '05 5-lug models do not have skid plate.

Thanks for the photo, I didn't figure them to have the same skid plate, but I thought there would be a plastic cover for aerodynamics.
I believe the Skid plate to be part of a Off-Road Pkg. There's no doubt the Pre-Runner model is better bargain than the SR5 package for over 2K......!
I got a price on truck today....dealer wanted to give me $1000 below TI Bluebook for my Tundra which is very clean w/ low mileage and charge me MSRP for the Tacoma.....This may take awhile.

The skid plate (the stamped steel non-decorative black) comes on P/Rnr and 4WD, but I did kinda expect to see a plastic one on the reg 2WD's as most manufacturers use them to clean up air flow under truck. The design of the Tacoma's front end may be shaped where one is not needed. Sure makes changing oil easier.
The SR5 pkg is also available on the P/Rnr access cab and is the only way to get body colored F bumper and chrome rear, the fancy sunvisors, intermitent wipers. In the past Toyota offered the convenience pkg which got deep tint glass pwr windows d/locks, cruise. Int wipers can be added simply by buying the switch for $90.00. I think the base interior look better than the SR5, no shiny finish on dash/console, and in my opinion the seat fabric looks better, almost like the sport fabric instead of fuzzy velour. Are you looking for a truck with of without p/windows/locks?
Door locks are not a concern but the adjustable Lumbar support on the driver's seat w/ SR5 pkg. is a must. I agree about the interior.....a little too glitzy for my taste.
