This is a discussion thread titled "Oil Change places Suck", within the Tacoma forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
About 2 weeks ago did a 15,000 mile oil change, nice morning had the day off and as I drove past the oil change place I figured no lines I'll let them throw some 5-30 in. As always they pull the air filter out to ty to get premium price out of an air filter. I tell the kid no thanks, it's got like a wasp and a few leaves on it. When they finish there "Service First Change" or whatever they call it, I ask the kid if they beat out the leaves or blew it out with compressed air, no he replies I just gave him a look of disgust. I then went to the store and bought the filter for like 10 bucks cheaper. ***holes at jiffy changes dont care about service, they just want that filter to look worse for the next change so the can terrorize you with high prices. Its so funny how clueless someone that is supposedly trained to do simple maintenace can be.

I just went to one on Sunday, and was fairly impressed with the service, they vacuumed the truck too.
The guy changing the oil had no clue where the oil filter was.
They too wanted to change my filter, I told them to put it back, and they did...as you mentioned without blowing the dirt off it.

The only oil change place I went to was a new shop up on Tramway in Albuquerque, looks like its part log cabin. It was right down the road from where I was living so it was very handy. I forget the name of it. They only do what you ask, and do not pressure you into buying something you dont need. You can watch them as they work, many shops prefer you not to even stand outside of the bay door. Still, I change mine when I can, but sometimes its not practical such as on road trips or whatever.

I was watching one of those news shows a while ago, and they rigged a car with cameras and the like, and took them to several different garages and service centers. Several Jiffy Lubes not only didn't do the proper service, the actually tampered with things that were perfectly fine. Another garage was actually filmed slamming a car's engine with a sledge hammer. Now i know that this isn't all the garages and service centers, but it's plain sad that it happens period. I'll never go to a Jiffy Lube, and I only go to the shop when it's absolutely, dead-serious, no choice necessary. Which is rarely at all.

I go to Jiffy Lube all the time every 3k, only because of a fleet maintenance account, I have them change wipers every other change, I'm due for a trans flush and oil change, this is only on my work van, no way will they touch my pleasure vehicle. by 3k the pennzoil 5w-30 is gritty and thin like diesel, these are 3k hard miles.
Last time I was at Jiffy-Lube I was in my '98 Taco. The guy didn't hold the oil hose in the oil intake on the engine and the hose came out and sprayed my entire engine compartment with oil, as well as the Lexus that was in the bay beside me. They wiped the compartment out as best as they could, and the manager offered me a free rear diff fluid change for the inconvenience and $5 for me to go down and spray off my engine at the car wash. When they went to do the rear diff fluid change, the guy in the pit was slamming my diff with something, then yelled up to the manager, "I stripped his rear diff plug." The manager yells, "What?". The pit guy, "I SAID I STRIPPED HIS REAR DIFF PLUG!". The manager tells me sorry, and I tell him I just want to leave. He goes in and makes a ticket (although the work was free of charge at this point), and I sign it and leave. When I get home I look at the ticket and at the bottom it is typed 'Customer arrived with stripped rear diff plug.' Lousy manager was covering his butt in case I complained to corporate, and he LIED on the ticket. That pissed me off so much that I just tell everyone about my bad experiences there, and change my own oil.
With my 07 Taco I installed the Fumoto drain valve, and it makes changing oil a pleasant experience since you don't really have to climb under the truck for more than 5 seconds. And I can actually reach the valve by just getting on my back under the front valve without climbing under the truck.
My advice is to just do your own oil changes. They designed the new Taco's so that it's a simple, easy job.
Oh, and stay away from Jiffy-Lube...
I have a Fumoto as well, the only problem it takes forever for the oil to drain. I run a hose from the oil filter housing down to the oil drain container. Keeps everything nice and clean. Good thinking Toyota, just wish the spark plug change didnt suck.

This is why its best to do it yourself. YOU choose the oil and filter, and this truck is so simple to do. 10 min to complete, if that.
If you CAN do it yourself, you SHOULD do it yourself. You're right. Only you can absolutely trust you. If you are educated on the matter [and changing the oil is pretty elementary] and you're willing to do it, just do it. That person's account with the Jiffy Lube with the horrible service and they lying manager is nothing short of horrendous and a piss poor excuse for service. Getting to the filter on my corolla is a bitch, but i do it anyway cause I know what I'm doing, I won't scam myself, and I'll get it done right.

Just change it yourself next time and we won't be having this thread in the first place
