We may be talking about TWO different things, I'm not sure. I was talking about the "Coded" keys that "Were/May Be" optional on some models of Toyotas. My wifes '05 Camry does NOT have a "coded" key. My '07 Taco DOES have a "coded" key. This type of key is implanted with an "Imobilizer Chip" that will
prevent the truck from being started, even if a correctly cut key is inserted in the ignition....BUT
without the correct code present. The Remote
may be another matter. However, I'm presuming the key AND Remote are related in this case.
I was told by my dealer, and have heard elsewhere, that ONLY the dealer can code a new key...
provided you still have one of the original BLACK keys to copy. Lose both keys and you are looking at a new $2000. computer.
I'm guessing you already know this, but I thought I would pass it on for the edification of those who may not be aware. TacoGuy
