Default Lost remote

Having a bad week... I lost the remote door lock for my Tacoma. How do I go about getting a replacement? I read some other forum where someone got one off ebay and programmed it himself. Are these things universal? What do I need to be looking for?

Thanks for posting your reply. It sounds like a replacement remote (fob) is pretty expensive.

Gentle folk:
As I said elsewhere on this site, I purchased 2 remotes on E-bay, and I acquired the programming instructions on tundrasolutions.com. Be sure to read through the programming instructions before attempting to program the remote. Often the E-bay vendor will also provide instructions. The cost was very reasonable...less than $30 dollars to my door.

We may be talking about TWO different things, I'm not sure. I was talking about the "Coded" keys that "Were/May Be" optional on some models of Toyotas. My wifes '05 Camry does NOT have a "coded" key. My '07 Taco DOES have a "coded" key. This type of key is implanted with an "Imobilizer Chip" that will prevent the truck from being started, even if a correctly cut key is inserted in the ignition....BUT without the correct code present. The Remote may be another matter. However, I'm presuming the key AND Remote are related in this case.

I was told by my dealer, and have heard elsewhere, that ONLY the dealer can code a new key...provided you still have one of the original BLACK keys to copy. Lose both keys and you are looking at a new $2000. computer.

I'm guessing you already know this, but I thought I would pass it on for the edification of those who may not be aware. TacoGuy

I am currently trying to buy a keyless fob / remote from ebay. I figured it is worth the risk for less than $20.

By the way, I have seen other sites that explain how to program the transponder / ignition key (as long as you have one original / working ignition key).

If programming the remote works out. I may try to get up a spare ignition key too. Thanks both of you for your responses. I will post back with my results.

Thanks for the offer. I did get the right remote for my truck. I wanted to let readers know that I successfully programed the remote. Here are the details:
My truck: 2005 Tacoma Access cab.
The fob:
FCC id:GQ43VT20T
IC:1470A-1T
($15 on ebay)
The instructions I found on another website: keyless entry for a 2005 tacoma dbl cab

Tried the instructions and failed. Tried again and failed. Tried again and again... Finally a light goes off (figuratively, not literally). Couple of weeks ago I had disabled the door alarm. I had to go into the door switch and reconnect the wires to the door plunger.

Tried and was able to get the truck to go into programming mode! (Failed a couple more times because I was struggling scroll down the directions on the laptop as I was working.) Finally got the successful response. Awesome.

Now, I am waiting for a transponder key to come up for the right price.

Thanks to everyone who posted.

Funny thing about that. My truck is an '07 Access Cab, and the numbers on my remote are Identicle to the numbers you list above. I suspect this number is only an FCC "frequency band width", or range authorization number.

Also interesting: My wifes remote for her '05 Camry is a completely different physical configuration, ie. size and shape. It's smaller. BUT, has the same FCC numbers on the back.

SO: What does all this mean? TacoGuy

PS: Maybe Real Men who drive trucks need a bigger remote.
