TacomaGeneral discussion forum for the 2005 and later Toyota Tacoma.
This is a discussion thread titled "tacoma programmer???", within the Tacoma forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
Newbie Q, just picked upan 05 tacoma, is there any kind a programmers or chips to put in this truck, I have an superduty as well, just wondering if there are products out there simliar to diesel stuff, thanks.
I would put a good exhaust and intake combo on before considering a programmer. I know that URD has a few different programmers for late model Taco's, they also say that you will notice a much bigger power increase when added with exhaust and intake. If you go with a URD, let me know what you think, I have been considering it.
I think the Tacoma could use a reprogramming of the transmission to prevent it upshifting prematurely and then having to kick down harshly to accelerate. I think it's set to maximize mpg and my V6 auto lags some till I force it into a lower gear.
As for hp gains....usually marginal on a non-turbo engine I've read.
I checked into getting a chip in another vehicle and was told that it would increase my maximum horsepower by about 20 horses but wouldn't have any noticeable effect at lesser power settings. Since I VERY rarely put my right foot all the way to the floor, I just couldn't justify spending the money. I do think that intakes/exhaust are the first things to do because they help at all power settings, not just when you are drag racing someone.
