    yup, thats what it says.

Most likely just for fuel economy? I am gonna stay with 5w-30 most likely.

    That apply to 05's too?

Guess it doesn't matter. My oil cap and manual say 5w-30. Since that is what it was orginally designed for, thats what I'll continue to run.

5w-20 was used to up the EPA mileage. Real world, does it help? Well, I'm getting better than sticker EPA est anyway with 5w-30.

5w20 means that the oil begins as a 5-weight grade oil, then polymers (ie-viscosity improvers) are added so when it reaches operating temps it will 'act' like a 20-weight oil.
A 5w30 contains more polymers in order to achieve the greater spread in viscosity index.
Polymers (viscosity improvers) do not lubricate, & bad things happen to them when they operate outside their designed range, such as during extreme cold or in overheating situations.
As a rule, you should always try to use an oil with the least spread between numbers (recommended by the Manufacterer of course).
I am refering to dino oils. Synthetic oils do not encounter the same issues as other methods are used to achieve viscosity differences.

Use a synthetic oil for these engines if possible.

^ That's pretty much how I understand it... However, as my '05 came with a recommendation for 5W-30, that's what I'm using.

Especially since I bought six cases of it...

Somebody brought this up over at TN. TSB# EG018-06 applies to all 06'/07' "GR" series engines..that of course pertains to the 4.0L(1GRFE). First I've heard of this:

Interesting note at the bottom of page 2 -- seems like they're walking a fine line...

Im running 5-30w Torco SR-5 Racing oil in my tacoma. It feels better than Mobil 1 Truck/ SUV. Im gonna switch back to SR-1 when I use up the last 8 bottles of SR-5

    RE: 5W-30 Torco

Most "real" racing oils contain lots of extreme pressure/friction modifier type additives, but a lot of things needed in a street driven vehicle that will not drain oil every few hundred miles is missing.

I let my truck go thru its first 1000 miles with the oil from factory then I changed to Mobile 1 5/30 FULL syn. And I have to agree with the statement at the bottom of the page. They are keeping it a little tight. Not good.
So I will stay with what I know works well.

My 2001 2.7 has had nothing but Mobile 1 , 5 w 30 from day one and have never had any problems at all. I'm now at 91,000 and change it every 7,000-8000 miles. The engine still purrs like a happy kitten, Lol.
