I'll be the dissenting opinion...if it's just a DD work truck and you're gonna haul a small trailer now and then, the S-10 will be much less expensive and get the job done.

Sorry, I don't know the long-term reliability of the S-10, but all you really need is four wheels, engine, bed...so if the S-10 is reliable in the long run, definitely give it some serious thought since it'll be cheaper than the Yota.

Of course, this being a Yota site, you should get the Tacoma .

Also the 05+ Tacomas are as large as a 1st-gen Tundra...so maybe consider an early model 1st-gen Tundra with the V8, they're nice trucks and blue book is pretty cheap for the 00-02 models.

If you're gonna keep it long after you're done using it for work, one of the 98-04 Tacomas will run for bloody ever, they just have a smaller box and the aft section of the frame is notoriously weak.

Hope that helps, good luck with your choice.

-Sean

As the owner of a 1998 S-10 (2.2L L4 auto) since that year (and awaiting my 2007 AC V6 Tacoma), I'd have to tell you to go for the Tacoma. Everything I hear about the older Tacomas speaks of stellar reliability. From what I hear and from my own S-10 experience, they don't stack up.

I've enjoyed my S-10. Small regular cab daily driver, it's served me well, but it's had its share of issues. Oil pan seepage, leaking transmission pan gasket, leaking A/C compressor, replaced alternator, replaced radiator which had a hole in it (could be the Dex-Cool coolant), windshield wiper computer replaced, cracking-off front grille/bumper plastic. Now, none of that is the actual engine, transmission, body structure, etc. so it could just be bad luck with parts, plus its age. Paint's been great, interior's held up well (though it's not high-quality), no transmission issues, etc. The 4-cyl is pretty anemic with the A/C on, so I'd avoid it in hill country if you like acceleration. Fine on flat ground, just not a drag racer.

Basically, the S-10 has a pretty average reputation and my experience speaks to that, whereas the Tacoma's seems a fair sight better, and if the 2005-2007's apparent build quality is any indication, it's the truth.
