I drive 160 miles a day on the highway at 75mph and haven't heard or felt any vibration with my skidplate?
I betcha they are blaming the tire vibration on the skidplate, thats my guess. Funning thing is that my truck never vibrated, wheels were perfectly balanced from the factory. It just sounds like toyota is trying to be proactive and eliminate any possible reasons for the trucks that did vibrate

May be. I still can't comprehend how a skidplate can be recalled or have problems. I suggest everyone make them include an real alignment, balance check as part of your vehicle purchase(I do this on all new vehicles I purchase because of the way they chain the vehicles to the trains, boats, trucks on transport).
I can't see an "aluminum" skid plate being recalled due to vibration. ALUMINUM DOESN"T VIBRATE! It has no resonance at all. Hit it with a hammer on one end, and the resonance will be gone within 6 inches. And thats on a 1" thick bar.
This skid plate isn't near 1" thick, there is no way it's vibrating things off. now maybe the mounting is lackluser and it shakes itself loose. But there's no way it's producing harmonics that are rattling other parts loose. Heck just throw some poly bushings in there, and your done. there's got to be another explanation.
I decided to email Longo and ask, since I am in the market for one.
Here is there response:
The price of the skid plate is $167.20 with the discount these prices do not include tax, as far as the skid plate being on recalled thats just a rumor they are being back ordered right now, I already ordered one for a guest of mine and am expecting it to come in this the first week of january.
That's exactly what my dealership said. Everything is on backorder and it should arrive during the first week of January. That's the last piece I'm looking for. So far I have the tube steps and trd seat covers.
Hello everyone out there. I am brand new to this forum, first post.
I just picked up my new 05 Access Cab with Off Road Package. I had the skid plate installed by the dealer. I noticed nasty vibration myself but it was during a really windy day. This was only experienced on the highway. My feeling was this was due to air being caught in the wheel wells and bed area. Like I said above, it was an extremly windy day. The vibration was really bad, like I was driving on a washboard road. I am picking up the Factory option soft tonneau cover tomorrow and will repost the results the next day. Incidently, I didn't notice any vibrations at any other times while driving when it wasn't windy out. I will ask the dealership tomorrow about recalls. FYI I live in the Toronto area of Ontario Canada.
One thing I don't like about the skid plate is that the front part of it isn't supported or bolt to anything, that might be the cause of the vibration, the other thing is it sits about 1/2" away from the plastic bumper covering, if you hit anything remotely hard, even a snow bank...that skid plate is going straight into your painted bumper. Nice.
My tonneau is back ordered until next week. It will be an Extang Black Max type one. I'm getting it from Toyota but Toy just buys them from Extang. I'd buy direct buy Extang isn't shipping them to customers direct yet. I really would prefer an Access Roll up but they're not shipping yet either. Anyway, going back to the vibration and skid plate. Toyota Canada has approximately 70 in stock. There is no recall or bulletin or anything like that according to Toyota Canada. Any dealer that I've talked to has never heard of such a thing. It's possible that the skid plate in the US and Canada is different or supplied by a different vendor, but I highly doubt it. On the Toyota website it's described as a 1/4" thick aluminum piece, it's certainly not 1/4". Lucky if it's 3/16". I am lucky I suppose that I don't get any vibration from this thing, at least that I can tell. I've had the truck up to 140km/hr and it's smooth as silk. Despite tire noise and the noise the bed, it's better then I expected. My old 99 Tacoma would huff and puff at that speed. This new Taco has room for way more.
This recall CANNOT be about the ornamental aluminum plate under the front bumper. It is not a skid plate. It would be ripped off the truck at the sight of a rock. The recall must be for one of the real skidplates under the truck.
Someone please tell me where this "on hold, recalled" or whatever information is coming from. When I called Toyota Canada, they said they know nothing of any recall. They had 75 skid plates in stock. I have one on my new truck and although it is cheap and dirty, I don't think it is the cause of the vibrations I have. I could be wrong. When I'm driving at highways speeds in a cross wind, the truck vibrates so bad, it's like I'm driving on a washboard road. I'm talking really bad. Other then that, I have the f'n noise coming from the back underneath where ever.
No Special Service Campaigns or Limited Service Campaigns ("recalls") have been issued to date on the 2005 Tacoma. In fact, no TSB's regarding field fixes or factory production changes.

There is an offical complaint regarding the skid plate. Here is the copy of text from the NHTSA web site:
Make : TOYOTA Model : TACOMA Year : 2005
Manufacturer : TOYOTA MOTOR NORTH AMERICA, INC.
Crash : No Fire : No Number of Injuries: 0
ODI ID Number : 10105999 Date of Failure: December 26, 2004
VIN : 5TETU62N85Z...
Component: STRUCTURE: FRAME AND MEMBERS:UNDERBODY SHIELDS
Summary:
2005 TOYOTA TACOMA ACCESS CAB WITH THE TRD PACKAGE AND SKID PLATE 2W DRIVE. E SKID PLATE CATCHES AIR AND CAUSES THE VEHICLE TO VIBRATE VIOLANTLY AT 75 MPH AND HIGHER, WHICH COULD POSSIBLY CAUSE THE LOSS OF CONTROL. WE REMOVED THE PLATE AND NOW THERE IS NO VIBRATION. PEOPLE WILL THINK IT IS THE TIRES BEING OUT OF BALANCE, BUT IT IS THE PLATE. TOYOTA NEEDS TO REDESIGN THIS PLATE AND CHECK THINGS IN A WIND TUNNEL.*AK

There may be a complaint, but there has not been an official response as either a TSB, Limited Service Campaign, or Special Service Campaign.
4 local toyota TRD stocking dealers cannot order this part number. They have no real reason, other than speculation. I work about 10 minutes away from NUMMI where MOST of the Taco's are built, and even my friends that work there can't tell me much......
