Let me give you a link. Look all the way down and there are pics on how to fix this. It is the solder on the resistor 510.
I took mine down and resoldered it. Works fine now. It is real easy.

Awesome! Mine JUST went out yesterday. There's no way I'm taking my truck to the dealer for something like this. I figured it could be fixed, the pics are perfect. I'll give it a try.
Bandit572 has the solution the 510 resistor needed to be soldered in my truck works fine now. Easy fix, why Toyota doesn't use this repair is beyond me.

More money in their pockets at $900 a pop for the temp/compass unit.
I have a 2005 Tacoma and the temp/compass unit is still working fine. It doesn't get very hot here, so maybe that's why. I'm wondering if the resistor solder fails more on truck in very hot climates?
my compass/temp readout just crapped the bed at 43k miles or so. i'm in Texas. i'm sure the brutal heat had something to do with it, but what a junk part. i have the extended warranty so i'll see what the dealer says.
otherwise i'll get the solder gun out and give it a whirl.
Well, guys and gals, I guess this will be pretty much a "common" problem. My 06 DC sport w/ 45K on the odo, compass and temp display just went dead. I'll be pulling it out this weekend to try the solder fix. It's always something. Thanks for all the good info. on this thread.
As usual-- great advise-- problem resolved. Suggest anyone with this issue, try this fix first. Took about 1/2hr. No cost except my time. This forum is a great source of knowledge. To all-- please keep up the great work. Thanks

Reason: problem fixed
I just did this fix on mine a week ago, and so far so good.
It makes me question the quality of Toyota parts... and where they are coming in from. Maybe made in China??
I did tell the local dealership about the problem, first they've heard of it. I kinda doubt that, but whatever, I just hope no one I know gets f'ed over by buying a new one... if I do Toyota is going to be getting a complaint filed on them.

I got lucky. Took my truck in for the 60K service a few days ago, and mentioned to the service advisor that the comp/temp gauge wasn't working. He said he just happened to have one on a shelf in his office that he ordered under warranty for a customer back in July who never picked it up, so he gave it to me for free! Installed it yesterday--it took about 5 minutes--and now I can tell the temp again. In all seriousness, I can't see this part costing more than maybe $75 bucks, $100 tops, and installation should be free as a courtesy since it's a 5 minute job. I just can't see upwards of $1000 for this.

Fortunately not. However, the 05+ Tacoma is the first Toyota to use a Delphi climate control system, and we've seen how the resistors go out on those too. I'm not completely sure, but the temp/compass might also be an Delphi part, as modules very similar to the Tacoma's are used in other domestically made trucks/SUVs.

Be sure to save your old one, fix it, put it up on ebay or whatever. If you dont know how to fix it, let me know. You can ship it to me, I'll put it up on ebay and we can split the money.

pulled my temp/compass readout to look at the resistor. looks normal to me...no seperation.
then took it to dealer...they fiddled with a connector and got it working again. then it died the next day...again.
so...back to dealer again soon to get a new one installed i hope. it's a junk part obviously with so many problems.
Well, I guess this is what we get when we buy a vehicle that is actually made in the USA.
A coworker had to put up with 6 months worth of the dealer playing around with her car to figure out a air bag issue. Her light would come on when it was cold. It turned out to be a bad connection.
