resoldered mine and its working fine. I also put extra solder on the rest of the conections so I dont have to open it back up again.

I have an 05 tacoma & the compass/temp died at around 76K - 1K out of warranty - anyway, I pulled the overhead assembly down, soldered the "510" resistor (mine was completely broke out & bouncing around) back in & presto worko!

15 min of work & $0 invested!

mine went south, haha actually it well just black after fadding out for weeks. I went to the dealership they said $400 installed then I pulled out the platinum $0 deductable extended warranty and they ordered it, too bad it took 3 weeks to get it in around christmas. They said it was on national back order. I guess these are going to be trouble. If you don't have an extended warranty, this is half the reason to getting one. $0 ded. platinum Warranty $800. Compass and temp gage $400, 2 broken mud flapps $60 each, new shocks and springs + labor $1,600, repaint driver door for deffective clear coat $500. This all after 3 years, I am Glad I got the warranty!

Mine has failed aswell and pulled out the circut board but the solder looks fine.
Has anyone just re-soldered the 510 and had any luck getting it to work again?

The condition where the compass and outside temperature display fails to work is caused by a hardware defect. Visit the following site for a low cost repair option.

$200 for 5 minutes of soldering work? Seems kinda pricey to me. . . .

I had the same problem as allot of others have had. Its a very simple fix. Pull the unit down from the head liner and find the sensor marked 510.

check this out for complete fix...

Needless to say I am driving around with no compass or temp gauge. I called Toyota and although they were friendly, they offered nothing for repair or reduced cost.

Anyone had success repairing?

Ohh.... as an FYI the dealer reported that they could get my display to work for short periods by disconnecting and then reconnecting.
Mine went out on my 2005 Tacoma. I removed the roof console box assembly and heard something loose inside. I removed the tinted cover & found a small piece numbered 510. I found an empty spot right above the other soldered 510 where it obviously broke from. It looks like cold solder joints broke and it lost the connection. I soldered it back in & it works now!

Some time ago there was a post explaining a repair for this very problem, it worked for me. It takes about one hour of your time a far cry from $1000 Toyota wants for a replacement.

Add me to the list of people who were helped by this post. It was literally about 7 minutes worth of work and my display is working normally again.

Well, I started this thread way back 10/07. Last week my display went blank again.
Resoldered the 510 and all his friends in there and we are good to go.
