TacomaGeneral discussion forum for the 2005 and later Toyota Tacoma.
This is a discussion thread titled "Compass and temp readout", within the Tacoma forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
Hi all, I get in the truck today and noticed the Compass/temp display had gone dark. I have checked the fuse box and the manual, but dont know which fuse it is or what the problem might be. No change with adjusting the brightness on the dash.
Any ideas?
I am reasoning: if it is the hardware for these devices, one of them would malfuntion. But with both gone, I am thinking it is the display. Again, these displays last awhile, so maybe the fuse?
This is on an 05 DC TRD OR.
I am not talking about the mirror, but the little display on the roof, just north of your map lights.
The mirror with auto dim and home link is fine.
Did you push the button on the display? I have that option on my truck. when you push the button it goes from F to C to blank and then back to F as I hit the button
I had the same problem with my 05 TRD sport. It's went out and the whole unit cost $875.00, add another 60 bucks to install. Thanksfully I got extended warranty covered with zero deductible.
First off...I find that U-tube vid very disturbing!!
Secondly, if you've checked all fuses and went through the different modes on the temp/direction display to no avail...Get to the dealer and hopefully your are still under warranty.
Mine has been perfect since day one.

those prices are nuts! Appreciate the discount but dang! I could put a sweet 40" LCD there instead for that
Anyone had success repairing one? Seems like a few people have had this issue, I am guessing the elctronics might be simple? Although I have not even taken it out yet.
If you have to purchase one, (not under warranty) I can sell them for $585 SHIPPED.
I know its still expensive, but its almost $300 off!
That would be a nice deal...you didn't hi-jack a truck load of Toy parts did ya?? Ha!!
What exactly fails here?? ( complete system or just the display)
Is it a self-contained unit w/ the sensors and display or is it separate components? I did some searching and found most ppl just replaced/ or installed the Auto-dimming mirror w/ the compass and temp gauge.
Heads up Please......Thanks!!

HAHA, I'm actually the internet parts guy for a Toyota Dealer in Mesa,Az, see signature. - and forum sponser.
On those units, most likely its going to be the display itself, (not confirmed, just a guess from my electronics background), and may be able to be changed, however, getting the correct replacement part may be a pain.
I have a 2005 Double Cab TRD Offroad, my unit stopped working at 48,500. I took the truck to the dealer and was advised that the display unit was bad, they quoted me $1000 for repair. Needless to say I am driving around with no compass or temp gauge. I called Toyota and although they were friendly, they offered nothing for repair or reduced cost.
Anyone had success repairing?
Ohh.... as an FYI the dealer reported that they could get my display to work for short periods by disconnecting and then reconnecting.
I had mine changed last month, luckly had the exstended warrenty on it. but it i didn't i would have just felt it there, broken. but i think there is only one screw under the sunglass or garage holder then you just can pop it out with a flat head screw driver.
