TacomaGeneral discussion forum for the 2005 and later Toyota Tacoma.
This is a discussion thread titled "Toyota compact trucks return in 2010!!!", within the Tacoma forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
The real test for me is if they will carry a motorcycle in the bed or not. No = no deal.
I agree. If I didn't haul my motorcycles around, I could just own a station wagon. Most of what I drag home from Home Depot doesn't need more than a wagon the size of a Mini Cooper. I've owned 6 ElCaminos... and they did everything I needed a truck to do... and had lots better performance... and got lots better gas mileage than monster trucks. It's all about power to weight ratio and aerodynamics.
If someone wants to 4X4 and play gecko... get a Jeep.

Were you aware that GM is infact bringing the El-Camino back in a year or two. It's not going to be called an ElCamino because it's part of the Pontiac line based on the G-8 with a V-8. But it is the same thing.
I think the A-BAT would be perfect for me. I really don't haul much (the occasional 4x8 sheet of wood, paint, bags of rock for the yard, etc) and the bed on my Taco is usually just a place to toss my muddy gear when I strip down from a backpack trip. Being out here where we have lots of open space and most of it far, far away from a gas station, better mileage and increased range would be a plus (I assume the hybrid powertrain would provide that).
The concept looks pretty cool to me. Even though I've driven nothing but pickups the last 25 years, I'm not married to the whole ladder frame, cab-and-box pickup. If a mini-ridgeline works, then I'll buy one. Just my 2 cents, which are worth a hell of alot less these days.

Yep, I've been following the Holden Ute for years, and posting on most every forum you'll find, to try and educate the American market on the fact that they even exist. When GM brought the new GTO here, I argued that it should have been the ute version (Maloo) and not the Monaro (which got rebadged as a Pontiac GTO). Unfortunately, as I heard someone say recently, turning GM around is like turning an aircraft carrier around... it takes years. They not only brought the wrong vehicle here, they failed in their marketing, and from what I read recently they were NOW going to bring the ute to the US... NOW THAT GAS IS $4.00 A GALLON.
Now who's gonna pay $35K for an ElCamino when gas is $4.00 a gallon? I'm convinced it would get acceptable gas mileage, since it has the power to weight ratio and aerodynamics part of the formula right, but it's still just too much money. GM also makes a smaller version, in Mexico and South Africa, that would work better. But either way, their engines are outdated technology for today.
Wow I don't like it. I really don't want it to grow on me either. they should Change the Name from A-BAT to FUBAR! But my wife likes it and so does my sister. Hmmmm maybe it was built by Women designers.
