I have a factory roof rack on my 08 DoubleCab (installed by dealer), and have not been able to find mounts for a carrier like a basket or case. Does Thule or Yakima make a set that will fit? Is there a model number?
The Tacoma roof rack is unique in that the crossbars fold into the side bars when not in use. I think I posted some pictures of this earlier in this thread, if not I can post them again.
Nice, I keep lookingh at adding a roof rack and anotherrack for my cap, just so I can carry some lumber (10').
For the cap you can use Yakima or Thule tracks, along with the towers which will allow you to have as many crossbars as needed. I dont know if they are at the same exact height as the factory rack.
I have seen one rack system built by 80/20 extruded aluminum. You could use something like the 1050 for the tracks and create your own crossbars. Heck, you could even build up some side supports as well to prevent the load from shifting or falling off. You could even go as far as having it extend up over the cab if you wanted to avoid purchasing and mounting the factory rack. I guess that really depends on if its a work or do-it-all truck. If it was a work truck, I'd put the 80/20 in there as a mix or a whole.
I built a bed extender, which mounts into the receiver hitch. It basically consists of a aluminum square tube (2" outside, 1.5" inner), used as a adapter sleeve it slides into the receiver. Then the 1515 (1.5" x 1.5") extruded slides into that adapter sleeve. The length of it is fixed, just allowing the tailgate to open. The height it also fixed, which is level with the wheel wells. When transporting plywood, sheet rock or whatever I just throw a scrap piece of 1x2 across those recessed grooves in the wheel wells, install the bed extender and viola! a level, flat platform for some long and wide stuff.
The next time I use it, I'll try to remember to take some pics.
The next project will be a small box to mount underneath the Retrax. Which will be good for tools and other stuff that stays in the truck at all times.

Hey guys, I purchased an '06 roof rack from toyotopartspeople and installed it myself without any problems. You have to pull of the rubber strips that are on the roof, tear off the bolt seals, then line this thing up perfectly. I remember that one of the bolts was really hard to put in, because of the paint job from the factory...so be careful not to ruin the bolt holes. It took me about 15 minutes to do the whole process after I read the instructions. It may seem that the bolts don't line up, but you have to make sure everything is exactly in place; therefore, don't tighten any bolts until you have the racks in position. I say this because the holes are a little off center and if you tighten them up as you put them in, you will not be able to get some holes to line up. So keep everything loose until you get it into place. --cheers
P.s: thread the bolts in first, then take them back out, this will allow you to clear out the spill-over factory paint from the threads...thus making the line-up process easier.

Has anyone tried to paint the roof rack to match the color of the truck? I am thinking it would be a bad idea to paint the crossbars, but if everything else was painted... it wouldnt look so out of place on the truck.
I dont think it would look very good. Play around with it in PhotoShop first.
I just saw some pics of someones bullbar bumper which was color matched, my opinion is the black looks better. And I'd imagine most any other accessory would be the same way. All the same color just doesnt look good at times, besides having accessories (some that is, which has purpose) adds a little character to a vehicle.

Last year, I posted in here that I'd have to get a picture of my setup for hauling the long kayak. Using Yakima rack over the cab and a Yakima Dry Dock in the hitch, our 13' kayak sits on top while I throw the shorter kayak in the bed. I could take the tonneau off except I lock stuff in there while we're out on the water. The racks are handy for very long ladders and lumber too.
