Fluids for front diff, rear diff, transfer & manual tranny?
Coming up here to the 30K mark, and thinking of replacing all the fluids with synthetics.
I am planning on using M1 75W-90 for all 4. Will this be ok? Has anybody else done that? According to the manual, just "gear oil" 75W-90 is needed for the manual transmission, the front diff and the transfer case. So the M1 gear lube should be better than what's required.
The rear diff calls for hypoid gear oil 90W or 80W-90 if I remember correctly. I believe "hypoid" would be any GL-5 gear lube, correct? So the M1 would be fine as well, as I doubt that the slight weight difference matters, correct? And the weight is a "recommendation" anyway.
Any comments, will this be fine? What do you guys do / think?
Re: Fluids for frond diff, rear diff, transfer & manual tranny?
I used 75w-90 Full syn QS in tranny, front diff, and transfer. M1 will work fine. Rear Diff went with 80w-90 semi-syn (LSD).
I wouldn't use full syn in the rear diff if you have an LSD. Guys have reported LSD chatter, Open diff, should be no problem.

Re: Fluids for frond diff, rear diff, transfer & manual tranny?
MANUAL TRANSMISSION and TRANSFER CASE: GL-4REDLINE OR AMSOIL 75W-90 because it's the recommended oil for the tranny AND it will prolong the life of the copper internal parts AND it shifts better. If you have auto someone else will chime in. I have REDLINE MT-90 in my tranny, shifts nicer and my gas mileage is slightly better now.
FRONT DIFFERENTIAL: GL-5 75W-90
REAR DIFFERENTIAL: GL-5 75W-90 (or if below 0 80W-90).
I have Mobil1 75W-90 in both diffs, I like it very much. I had Amsoil 75W-90 GL-5 in the tranny & it was fine, but notchy and when I changed it last it was full of billions of shiny metal shavings.
Re: Fluids for frond diff, rear diff, transfer & manual tranny?
Thanks demoncleaner & pdxyota!
I have done some more research as well, and it looks like I will go with M1 75W-90 or Redline 75W90NS for front & read diff, and will use Redline MT-90 for the manual transmission and the transfer case.
One thing I am wondering about: everybody seems to recommend a GL-5 gear oil with the friction modifier (like M1 75W-90 or Redline 75W90). While the modifier should not hurt my non-limited slip diffs, a GL-5 gear oil without it (like Redline 75W90NS) should be equal or better, right?!?

Make sure you get the proper limited slip additive when you do the lube change in the rear diff. I had mine done and the shop didn't add it. Within 50 miles my truck was squealing, groaning, clunking, and grinding around every turn. I flushed it out and used the right stuff but still haven't gotten rid of all the noises while turning at low speeds. I'm just hoping nothing got chewed up in there while it had the wrong lube in it.

Then regular Mobil1 75W-90 GL-5 front & rear differentials.
Redline MT-90 75W-90 GL-4 in tranny & transfer case.
10mm hex for front differential, ALL the rest take a 1/4" 14mm socket (is that right guys?)
NO ADDITIVES NEEDED
#1) Get to your dealer & get ALL the crush washers you'll need to replace the ones in there now. ($5-7)
#2) Open the FILL plugs on each unit first.
#3) When your tranny stops taking fluid & it's draining out, jack it up and put a tiny bit more in (1/2 cup or slightly more). It is supposed to add a bit of protection and shouldn't blow out the breather tube.

I'm using Redline MT-90 in the 5-Speed M/T and Mobil 1 75W-90 in the Front & open Rear Differentials and in the Transfer Case of our '08 regular cab 4WD, 2.7L Tacoma.
