TacomaGeneral discussion forum for the 2005 and later Toyota Tacoma.
This is a discussion thread titled "2005 tacoma front vibration", within the Tacoma forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
I did get the Alignment done, it did improve the steering and the overall stability of the truck on the freeway, but that damn vibration won't go away, my truck has 37,000 miles on it so I am not sure what the warranty expires at, I do know someone who works at one of the major Toyota dealers in Albuquerque, so maybe that will help I dont feel like droppin 2 g's on a front diff right now
Ok finally some good news, my Dad and I were checking out my truck for a while on Sunday my dad drove the truck and he said the vibration is coming from the the front drive shaft, he is pretty sure that the drive shaft is not true. Saturday I am going to take the bastard off and see if the vibration goes away. I stumbled upon a thread form a guy that rotated the yolk on the drive shaft 180 degrees, so I'm going to try that if the problem is indeed with the drive shaft, finally if that is successful I will take the truck in to get the shaft re-balanced. The slight lift that the 5100's added must of put just enough pressure on the axles to throw the shaft off balance.
Well my truck has 42000 miles on it and i'm still getting the vibration, it doesn't really bother me now because i got some bfg's!, i never got the drive shaft rebalanced, but I am begining to think that there is actually something wrong with the wheel bearings specifically on the left side, I am still determined to help out other taco owners but I just bought a house and I am getting a new job so im pretty busy. I will be trying the bearings before the driveshaft very soon i will get back to you guys asap
^Hey, if I were you, I'd go to the dealer and have them check the front differential- tell them the problem your having and that you know it's the front diff. The warranty on this is good for either 50 or 60,000 miles (don't remember which) and 5 years-- powertrain. They should replace it for you if they are worth anything. I don't know exactly what is bad about it or what, if anything they've done to correct the situation on the diff they'd be putting in, but it's the only solution I've heard about to this problem. Maybe you could get some info about the actual problem and report it back here? Make Toyota back their product.
Everybody's talking about the front diff but what if you don't have the 4x4?
My wife's tacoma is having the same vibratioin issues but I think it's the wheel bearings.
This vibration is a know issue for toyota trucks with a lift kit that places the cv shafts in a position other than neutral. Whe the lift is installed it places an angular load on the cv joints and thus pulls down on the bushing in the diff housing and pulls out on the side gear inside the differential. If you have a lift kit and the diff has been replaced by your dealer, you will find the vibration comes back within six months to a year. The diffs are being updated to correct this issue. However trucks with lifts will wear out these parts again. Stock trucks will unlikely suffer the same fate. These issues do not effect older trucks and 4runners that had unlocking hubs.
Both axles spin, when the truck is rolling. They are splined to the hubs. The drivers side axle is splined into the side gear within the differential, the passenger side axle is splined to gear that is engaged when the vehicle is placed in 4wd.
Hope this helps.

Mr. 3, sorry I didnt address your issue. I would suspect your vibration or buzz, as I would put it, is likely from feathered tread in your tires. I have only seen one wheel bearing issue on prerunners 05-09. The hubs are similar to 4wd trucks but without cv stubs through them. I would change my tune if you mentioned that you have struck a curb or something similar sideways?
hope this helps,

Wow! That is the best explanation I've read yet regarding this problem. I thought it was just the Tundra having this issue, but it looks like other models have it too. My 07 Tundra is going in this Tuesday for a second front diff replacement. I hope its the newly redesigned version. I wish we had those old locking/unlocking hubs again.

Cool.
Thanks for taking the time to explain but I think that this is a different issue.
This vibration happens in the morning when cold.
The process is as follows:
-Start the car
-Put in Reverse
-Roll....Roll....vibration.....Roll...Roll...vibrat ion (While the car is rolling backward)
-Stop
-Put in Forward gear
-Drive off
Now the vibration could be fealt during the forward roll only if going slowly and it is at the same interval as in reverse. It is not constant.
Once the engine is warmed up, the vibration is gone and cannot be fealt.
This was why I was thinking wheel bearings, but does anyone else have any suggestions?
This same exact thing is happening to my other firend that has the same truck.
Remember also that myself and my friend does not have a front diff.
Anyone?
