Default DIY Painted stock TRD 16" alloy wheels

I know many members have done walkthrus of this task (phi kai being the member who gave me inspiration), but my roommate took a lot of pictures so ima make this thread!

Purpose: to repaint stock alloy TRD 16" wheels graphite so it does not look stock.

Materials: Rustoleum primer, Duplicolor wheel paint (2 cans), Duplicolor wheel clearcoat (1 can), masking tape, newspaper, clean wipes, tack cloth, and jack + jack stands.

Process:

1. Jack up your truck and support it with jack stands!!!

2. Remove wheels and begin masking the tires and valve stems (I used newspaper in conjunction with masking tape to save tape and hassle):

3. Using a low-grit sand paper, gently scuff up all areas to be painted. BE THOROUGH!!! Most important part of a paint job is preparation!!! My roommate and I spent about 20 minutes carefully scuffing up the wheel:

4. Using clean wipes, soapy water, or any other cleaning solution, clean the wheels of any dirt and particles. dry with cloth:

5. Using tack cloth, give the wheels a final wipe down (this stuff is sticky and annoying but it gets rid a A LOT OF DIRT!!! Take your time

6. When the wheels are perfectly clean and spotless, prime it in 2 very light coats and one medium coat. You don't have to be thorough on the first few coats, just get a general coat of chemicals on the wheels. Fill in the spots moderately with the third coat:

7. After 10 minutes of applying last primer coat, apply base coat for wheel color. Again, 2 light coats and 1 medium coat:

8. Without touching the painted areas, move the wheels somewhere safe to dry!!! Clean up after yourself and remember to recycle!

9. I will have the finished results on in a few days! Thanks for reading and PM me if you have any questions!

I got all my materials from the neighborhood Kragen.

I learned a lot from Duplicolor's online tutorial:

Phi Kai's original DIY:

Very nice write up! I wish I had the balls to do this mod. I think I like the graphite better than black. Can't wait to see them on your truck.

Please give us pics with them on the truck. Looks very straight forward and seems like an easy weekend task.

An important tip to remember when painting is to do it in a well ventilated area, and also make sure there is little to no humidity.
