TacomaGeneral discussion forum for the 2005 and later Toyota Tacoma.
This is a discussion thread titled "Ok... save me from myself!", within the Tacoma forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
I have an '02 Tundra Access Cab 4WD with a 3.4l V6 with a tow package. It remains in nearly-new condition. I really like the mechanical transfer case lever over the electrical/electronic version on the V8s. The only mod it has is a K&N FIPK cold air intake/filter. It has 70,500 miles on it. The only repairs it's had since I've had it have been the ball joint recall, one heater knob replacement, and now the pull-out cupholder. Nothing significant to be sure.
I have my eye on an '08 Tacoma double cab 4WD with it's 6500 lb tow rating. Other than it being six years newer a few extra horses, a cabin air cleaner filter, and a significantly better (lower) emissions rating, is there anything else I'd be gaining for the $15k difference to trade?

Reason: oops... new Tacoma... NOT Tundra...
Does your engine have the belt or a chain?
The new V6 has a chain.
There is something that you want that your Tundra does not have that you want....otherwise, you would not be considering it.
Frankly, it is a moral imperative that you get the Tacoma.

It's the timing belt version of the 3.4l six. I'm not sure that one is clearly better than the other; just different.
Yes... there are a couple of things that the Tacoma offers; the 6500 lb towing capacity is one. I have a travel trailer with a 5300 lb as-equipped curb weight that I tow occasionally with my Tundra. It's a little over the 4800 lbs quoted for the Tundra, but not enough to be significant as the V8 version of my truck is rated at 6800 lbs due to trans and horsepower. It works the V6 a little harder, but isn't a problem.
The 'knob' 4WD selector is my biggest complaint about the new Tacoma right behind the way the ECU holds engine speed during a shift(6Speed Manual Trans). After I get some miles and some age into it I will most likely be flipping the shackles, the tension shackles have to be one of the stupidest design decisions I've seen on a pickup with an "Off-Road" trim package.
Those are my only real complaints and I've convinced myself that I can live with them. The rest of the truck rocks IMO.
