Finally fixed my Tacoma rear drum brakes on my '06 Tacoma...
I have been having long brake pedal travel and the e-brake comes more than 3-4 clicks. I've tried everything, backing up hitting the brakes, using the e-brake forward and backward while driving, bedding the brakes in, etc.
Next step was to take the drums off and spray the entire assembly down with brake cleaner and then lube the springs and assembly.
I didn't notice much of a difference after this so I decided to take them apart again and I found that the automatic adjusters were working when the pads were spread apart. I used a screwdriver and made the star adjuster spin finally and they now adjust properly. I spun the star gear adjuster until the pads made contact with the drums.
I put everything back together and the truck feels like it has brand new brakes, and the e-brake works perfect again.
Just a note to guys who wheel their Taco (through rivers and puddles where drums get submerged) and feel their brakes suck, make sure you service the drum brakes often, they can get dirty and parts can get stuck.
Only 33K on my truck too...damn drum brakes suck. Wish we could retrofit the FJ rear disc brakes.
