This is a discussion thread titled "Fuel Tank Armor?", within the Tacoma forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
A few weeks ago I reported (in a post) the loss of a locking gas gap by possible thieves attempting to siphon my gas. Well, this past weekend a friend of mine (while down in L.A.) got his tank drilled by thieves for gas. This has prompted me to search for an aftermarket fuel tank skid plate (armor) to detour would-be thieves. However, I've yet to find anything available... Does anyone know of any sources for such an item? Thanks...
Budbuilt has a gas tank skidplate available. They don't have it listed on their website yet but it's available. Here a link to someone that put one on their truck. Pictures start on page 3.
And sparks wouldn't matter. It's not the fuel that ignites from sparks, it's the fumes. You wouldn't have any fumes at the bottom of the tank, only the fuel itself.

The cop taking my friend's report stated that the crooks are using a cordless drill, and have hit vehicles with both plastic and metal tanks. He also said that he has responded to an attempted theft where it didn't work out so well for the "bad guys." The drill ignited the fuel, but no "bad guys" around - just a charred drill and burning vehicle. Lastly, he stated that this type of crime is on the rise...protect yourself.
I looked into the Bud Built skid plate (calling them), but it was too intrusive for my application. I was told that one has to order off-road (beefier) straps from the dealer and pull the tank. The skid plate goes for $200.00, plus shipping. I'm not going rock crawling, just trying to protect my tank from idiot thieves.

Yea, those fumes off the gas after it flows down the drill and into the vent slots where the brush holder/brushes reside, and on down to the armpit area burn very well, even if it's not the liquid that is burning.
