Default Magnaflow cat back exhaust K&N Air Intake 07 Tacoma DC 4.0L 6spd

Magnaflow cat back exhaust K&N Air Intake 07 Tacoma DC 4.0L 6spd

Last fall I was pondering the very difficult decision of selecting the right exhaust for my taco. It was between Borla, Magnaflow, and Flowmaster. Countless hours of research on the forums and internet still left me undecided between Magnaflow and Flowmaster as best bang for my buck. I did not come across a lot of info on Borla so that made it easy to narrow down to the final two. My biggest concerns were having it sound ricey (read a lot about this) like a pimped out 4cyl civic and I didn’t want it to sound like one of the old Cherry Red glass packs we used to run in the day. I listened to many videos and sound clips on YouTube but nothing was like the real thing.

I decided to go with Magnaflow mostly because of price and one of my unfortunate chode like buddies who lives in Ohio has a Tundra with a Magnaflow setup. I didn’t take his word for MagnaFlow very seriously because he has a Tundra and he has the stealership change his battery and wiper blades for him. The last time he held a screwdriver in his hand he was either drinking it or listening to it.

It took me about an hour to install the exhaust. Remember to replace the donut gasket ($15 from the dealer). Took about an hour to install the K&N intake. When I fired it up in the garage for the first time I could not wipe the smile of my face.

At idle it has a noticeable small little rumble to it. Once you get above 2500RPM and you get on it or going up a hill it roars. On the highway at 3000 RPM it is noticeable. Some people don’t like the sound or the droning. I love it and its not really that bad. The benefit of a 6 speed is you can romp on it and control the sound or cruise right around 2500RPM then slam the throttle and let it roar.

I read some other posts that mentioned a little low end loss and I believe a bit of low end power is lost but with the manual transmission I never let it creep below 1800-2000 RPMs if I’m cruising.

I purchased both the exhaust and the intake from Performance Peddler. I saw the K&N intake on ebay and it came out to like 10 bucks cheaper (including shipping) than what Performance Peddler was charging but the guys at PP matched the price.

Only thing I was disappointed with is the intake had a small scratch on it and the heat shield mounts do not line up on the 07 taco fender. I have to follow up with K&N about this. I am not running the heat shield now. Anyone think this is a problem in the summer?

Performance Peddler
Exhaust – 16625 - $348.93
K&N Air Intake - 77-9025KP - $227.95

I’ll attach pics later.

I heard through the grapevine that your OH buddy also does not use a heatshield with the K&N intake setup due to a "cleaner" looking appearance. Some companies like Downey don't even include a heat shield with their systems (Downey - says it can trap water when crossing streams, etc.). Tell your friends at Jiffy Lube when they're doing your install they don't have to put it on. You should suffer minimal performance loss in your weekly trips to the grocery store. Gotta go my screwdriver is ringing...

I have pretty much the same setup on my truck. I really like my magnaflow. I got the heat shield to fit w/o any problems though.
