TacomaGeneral discussion forum for the 2005 and later Toyota Tacoma.
This is a discussion thread titled "Knocking/tapping noise driver side front.", within the Tacoma forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
This is driving me nuts! On colder days it's louder! It seems to be coming from beneath the dash near the display gauges or inside the engine bay on that side. Sounds like someone tapping their finger on a table. Not their nail, the finger. I thought it was one of the tabs that holds the hoses, but after using a zip tie to secure it, it's still there!
anyone else have this problem?
I'm sure the dealer wont touch it since I only have the drive train warranty left over.
Got anything on the cowl under the plastic? Maybe something bouncing around in there?

Had a very similar noise in my 06. I tracked it down to the drivers side mirror. Might be louder when its cold because the plastic mirror trim is more stiff and rattles off the metal door frame a little harder. I removed the plastic cover on the door and cranked down the 2 bolts that hold the mirror on and everything's quiet now. Give it a try.

Hey, if you can narrow it down to the mirror, there are also 3 more star-head screws that may need to be tightened underneath the mirror (1 is exposed and the other 2 are underneath the plastic cover on the bottom of the mirror outside...it just pops out with a little screwdriver). My driver's side mirror has been a little loose lately, and I just tighted those last 2 screws and that took care of it. So be sure to check those 3 screws out too.

Wow, I have had the same noise for probably 8 months to a year....ya it sounds like hard plastic knocking...usually only when it is below 45 degrees....very strange. what is weird is that it goes away when the engine warms up. i wonder why a mirror would act that way. I haven't figured out where it is coming from, but I will check out the mirror tomorrow morning.

I to have this problem but have yet to be able to track it down and it also drives me nuts. I'll check the mirror to but that's not where it sounds like its coming from. Mine sound dash or firewall area oriented. The couple times i've been to the dealer they just tell they can't duplicate the noise. Sounds kinda like a rubber hose slapping around, and mine also only does it when its say below 55 degrees and goes away when it warms up. Any other ideas put em out here and maybe we can figure it out.

Ok, I talked to one of the master mechanics (Is that the term?)
He took time out of his day to help me find the location of the problem. Took his time yesterday, but the sound wasnt there since it was so dam warm.
This morning it came back and we might have narrowed the problem down.
He says it's the fuel line and when he went under the truck to listened to the fuel line he said it got worse.
I need the truck this weekend so I'll be taking the truck back in on wednesday. He said he would replace the fuel pump and another part (fuel relay) i think it was?
I too have had the same issue, 05 Tacoma. Took it to the dealer twice and talked to two seperate people. Weather was cold, in the 40 degree range. Both people told me it was a cold weather knock. And that Tacoma's are known for it, BS or not.
I have been over every inch and can find nothing loose. I even checked the mirror. Guess now I will have to wait until it gets cold again, or someone here finds the problem.
Bill

I had to pay $45 for diagnosis, my trucks still under power train warranty so I'm not sure why I had o pay for diagnosis? Maybe it's something you have to do.
Anyways we narrowed it down to the fuel pump and fuel relay switch.
Toyota wants 98 bucks for the part and a total of 198 to fix it. The fuel relay chip isnt under warranty, but some how the fuel pump is. Anyone know if this is true?
I'd rather just take the chip and see if someone can fix it. No way I'm forking up $98 for that part!
I think this relay has been bad for a very long time, even before my bumper to bumper warranty went out. I've had trouble starting my truck sometimes, it'll crank over but wont start unless i crank it for 2-3 seconds, sometimes I've even had to stop and re try again... Low an behold
"The main symptom of a bad fuel pump relay is that it takes a lot of cranking for the engine to fire. The ECM normally engages the fuel pump for a few seconds when you turn the ignition on to pressurize the fuel rails. If you don't hear the fuel pump run for a few seconds when you turn the ignition on, you should suspect there is a problem with the fuel pump relay. "
Anyhow, thats whats wrong with it! go tell your dealers!
P.S. anyone know why the Fuel pump relay would not fall under drive train warranty?

i had the same problem from my 05 tacoma and my dealer found the issue with the heat sheild on the cats and haven't heard it any more since the repairs. Fix was a loose heat shield.

How is a bad fuel pump or relay causing a tapping sound?
the tech said the sound was louder when listening to the fuel rail under the car. Then again they wanted close to 200 bucks to change the Fuel pump relay. I'm going to take it in and have them change the fuel pump under warranty and if the sound goes away cool. If not they'll have to remove the fuel pump and put the old one back in. What ever though.
