Default Rusty Frame on 05

Anybody else with an 05 noticing what looks like an unusually high degree of rust on the frame? With Toyota deciding to extend the frame warranty on the 95-00 Tacomas because of rust, I'm wondering if Toyota will eventually do that on ours. I check out other trucks in parking lots--Fords, Dodges, etc., that are much older than mine--and they don't have half as much rust on their frames as mine does. Plus, I manage to wash the truck and the undercarriage about once a week all winter long. My original plan was to pay off this truck and then keep it for a good long time, but now I'm not so sure it'll last.

After 4 winters, approx 25% of frame is rust, the other black paint.... at least50% rust on hitch/under spare. But I probably see more salt in winter than anyone as its mined only 30 miles away. Agree other trucks of same age look slightly better, but they also have rust around here. Drop your spare (air it too) and spray out the frame there, normal washes won't get to it. It'll scare you.

Its paid for and I'm running this truck at least a decade so will be undercoating her this summer. Don't hold your breath waiting for Toyota to help us out.

I have rust on my 06. It's bad in some places and plan for it to get worse. It spends 8 hours a day at work (500 yrds from the ocean), I drive it on the beach and the rest of the time inland 2 miles or so. The salt air is bad but seems a little worse on my Taco then other vehicles I have had. The hose clamps inside the engine bay are rusting, the bolts for the ABS are rusting, as well as parts of the frame & driveline components and cylinder heads are oxidizing too.

I just spray it real well on the underside each time I come off the beach and everytime I wash it. Glad I don't have a steel bed to worry about

What exactly does the Rust part of the warranty cover? I would think it should cover 25% of the frame being rusted. I noticed the inside of my rear bumber was starting to rust so I hist it with a can of Zero Rust and there is no more rust. I swear by Zero Rust, it is easy to apply and in my experience works just as well as POR-15. However if is much stuff is rusting as you guys are claiming that would be quite a job for Zero Rust or POR-15.

Rust-Through60 months/unlimited miles (corrosion perforation of sheet metal).

I answered my own question, I guess that wont help. However Toyota seems to take care of its customers, take it to the dealer and complain, or call Toyota and see what happens. They may offer to Undercoat your truck.

I noticed some rust on my frame in some spots, and we don't even get a lot of salt on the roads here, i touched up with some flat black rust-oleum. I also noticed there is no rubberized undercoating. My wife's 01 pathfinder has it, my 01 subaru has it. wonder why toyota doesn't use it?

I have an 07 Tacoma, that I've had only 5 months and the frame is starting to rust, more that any other vehicle i've ever had.
I already had my back bumper replaced, it was bubbling and rusting thru the chrome. I must say Im very dissapointed at this point.

Thinking of oil spraying it this year to help save it.

Man, I had not heard of this problem prior to my 08 purchase earlier this year. I'll keep a close eye on it. Are there certain spots that seem to be most prone?

Here are a couple photos of the rust. It's all surface rust at this point, but all rot starts as surface rust and I'm thinking that if it's this bad at this point, what's it going to look like in a few more years. There doesn't seem to be any area that's especially prone to rust--it's all over.

Thats bad... I would send those pictures to Toyota and tell them this is the last Toyota you will ever buy if they can't work with you for some sort of resolution. One thing Toyota is great at, is taking care of their customers an keeping them happy.

I tell ya, the calcium chloride the DOT's up the East Coast put on the roads in winter can seriously eat some metal up. My VDOT buddy says they have a lot of the same rust problems with it on their dump truck frames, some only a few years old.

I don't drive on salted roads in winter alot. It's mostly rural here, and the roads are just sanded, not salted, because of the wells. So it's not alot of salt, and already there's this much rust. Toyota definitely has a problem with these trucks.

Yeah, it sounds like there's a definite problem already there, I didn't know if you drove through that stuff or not.
