TacomaGeneral discussion forum for the 2005 and later Toyota Tacoma.
This is a discussion thread titled "Tacoma vs Tundra - MPG", within the Tacoma forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
This is an interesting thread I'll be watching because like many I have been looking at the new Tundra's now for a while. Then I started looking at what I use a truck for and could easily get by with the Tacoma double cab, long bed, 4x4. The mileage has been my sticking point though because the window sticker isn't much different. So I'll just keep watching and then make some decisions.
Take a look at the small print numbers underneath the large mpg numbers on the window sticker. My personal mpg has always been at the high end of those numbers. Those large numbers are an average of what a wide variety of drivers can expect.
My dad and I purchased trucks within a month of eachother. he got the 07 taco 4.0L and I go the 08 tundra 5.7L. We both drive about the same amount of highway. My mileage has been averaging out at a little over 17 (17.3) and his is about 17.5. I am 24 and like to hit it every so often and he is 52 and lugs his around in 5th and 6th (manual). I see that highway is about the same (you lose more MPG speeding in a tundra than the taco which will keep over 20 mpg at 75+ consistently). Low speed sucks for the tundra as it stays under 10 mpg no matter how easy you drive it until 6th gear. The taco will get consistently in the teens with lower speed driving as long as your not dogging it. All in all, I think for the amount of truck and very similar drive out prices for the trucks after rebates I would pick the tundra for a daily for comfort and size since im a big dude. just my .02 cents. interesting thread though.
Just to add, after headers and exhaust on my 5.7 i get 23-26 cruising on flat grade at 40-55 mph!!! ride to work is flat and 45 speed limit!
Josh

now my question that does dovetail to mpg's i have a 2000 ac tundra that i replaced the tranny in last year. avg in town 15 and hwy 19 . i was looking at the 2005 taco v6 auto. 2wd trd off road. ride would be stiffer, but i also like the pipline roads and forest roads to go do my photography trips in west texas. question is would the change to the taco be worth the change. 2005 taco and 2000 tundra seem to be the same size. i do not need the 2008 titanic i mean the tundra. throw in your .02 or more if ya got it.

They are same width, but the Tundra is slightly bigger inside, back seat, 10 inches longer, and the bed is 3 inches longer and wider, but taco is a little deeper. You should do 2 to 3 mpg better with the Taco. Worth trading up? thats your call.
My father is in the same boat, 05-06 4x4 AC Tundra or Taco. but with gas he's thinking Taco.

I've consistently averaged (city and hwy) 20.9 and 21.1 MPG with my 05 Taco. I had to change my aggressive driving style a bit, but it works. I go the speed limit and use cruise control on long straights to keep the engine RPM steady. I've noticed the DBW pedal is very sensitive to slight changes.
During the winter though, I average about 16-18 MPG due to the ECU "adjustments" which dump more fuel into the combustion chamber since the air is colder and denser.

I get exactly what you have been, both winter and summer. But since I drive it more in the winter I've been wondering if there's any way to get that 16-18 up closer to 20.
Perhaps this GPM calculator might be helpful. It is the work of the researchers responsible for the recent stories around the MPG and GPM confusion. You can throw in some numbers to see if the difference is worth it to you (solely on $ per mile).
I get 21+ in day to day driving in my '07 V6 4x4 Tacoma. I'm gentle off the line, cruise with the "normal" flow of traffic and almost always run the AC.
05 4.0 v6 taco claims are 17 my friend get 14city to 16hwy
05 4.7 v8 highly modified i get 14city to 16hwy sticker said about 17 if i remember.
07 & up V8 5.7 sticker says 13city and 17 hwy.
now many claims are all over the place from 9 to 24 for all these trucks listed.
you decide, read may of the thread's & post's.

my co worker claims his 07 crewcab taco 4x4 with 4.0 gets 22-25mpg....of course he also claims his truck had a sticker price of 40k dollars...neither of which is believable...who would pay 40k for a tacoma? i woudnt pay that for my tundra haha...

Well the very best I've ever managed by driving very moderately, not idling, etc. is 21mpg for a tankful so if he's getting that regularly, the only thing I can think of is that he only drives downhill.
