Question My awesome Boyfriend...pulled tranny plug not oil!!!

Help! My boyfriend ( who is very mechanical I swear! ) pulled the tranny plug accidentally instead of the oil plug on my 2006 tacoma 4x4 5speed automatic.

I have been online all day and found too much differing info on how to refill the tranny. I can't find a dipstick, or a fill hole on the side of the tranny. I think a photo might help. I called Oil Can Henry's to ask what they would do and they said they can't even service it, I would have to take it to the dealer.

I am happy to take it to the dealer at this point, the problem being: one it is sunday, and two the dealer is 30 miles away. We just drained the pan, can I still drive it that far? I would LOVE to just refill it if I could find the dang hole.

My truck has 35k and the fluid is nice and clean. So anyone who can help me:

I LOVE YOU!!!!

if it makes you feel better i have a penned topic on another forum for newbies about that exact thing !

ok there is no dipstick
the oil is good for 100K so not easy to add it !

how much did he drain out? if less than a cup or so you would be ok going to the dealer
it takes special tranny fluid !!!!!
if more than a little bit..well think you can use a pump and add some fluid through the side hole on the case? just make sure you have the right fluid !

the dealer usually does a system flush to replace the oil ( bout $1 to 2 hundred if i remember?)

to add the right amount they do temp check and run through the gears , so not a easy dipstick thing, but it is a no maintenance item

Oh thank you Phantom, we definitely drained more that a cup....... so we found the fill plug finally after looking at a post on the tundra forum. We will go purchase a hand pump in the morning and add some of the correct oil.

Do I still need to take it to the dealer to have it changed etc.? How critical is the correct amount of oil?

Thanks again!!!! =) heather

Dealer is the only place to get fluid for the Tacoma.

Good luck, as the 1st reply has everything you need to know.

If the drain pan was empty when you started, then accurately puur into a measuring cup to figure how much you removed, then tomorrow go to the dealer and buy more fluid to replace old. As long as you know how much was lost +/- ~2oz's just refill and as long as it was not off from the factory, it will not be off now. If by chance the drain pan was new, you could strain through some cheesecloth or some pantie hose to make sure no dirt that could have fallen off the frame has contaminated it, just reuse it, and purchase 1qt from dealer to add an ounce or two that is still coating the drain pan and whatever you used for a filter.

Any news on the outcome?, hope all went well. I guess it is still a little early on the west coast, but let us know.
