TacomaGeneral discussion forum for the 2005 and later Toyota Tacoma.
This is a discussion thread titled "Tacoma Double Cab Window Tint", within the Tacoma forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
I have a 2008 Tacoma Double Cab and I want to tint my windows. I would like the front windows to be as dark as the back one come from the factory (20%???) and then to have the back ones just a bit darker. I was thinking about just doing the 20% all the way around but I don’t know how dark that will come out.
Anyone have experience with adding 20% to the rear on top of the existing 20%? Maybe I should to 20% in the front and 35% in the rear?
I live in CA, San Diego Area. I didn't care about tint laws and still did it. Anyways, I did same thing as you're looking for just without the back film over existing tint. First off (if doiing it yourself) get a window film with brownish finish (there's green also) because that's the finish the back windows tint have. In terms of percentage, I tried several and the best was 26%, looked exactly as the ones on the back and at night, you can barely see to the inside. Daytime vision (from out to in) depends on sun position, etc. but mostly looks good. I went 26% because back ones are about 35%, but since you have the windshield with lots of sunlight getting in, you need a darker tint so looks same as back one. I recommend Llumar or Solar Gard Window Films, best on the market!
I did 20% on fronts and 5% over the factory tint on the rears. You CAN NOT see in the rear windows, weather it's daytime or night-time with a flashlight up to the window

I personally have 2% all the way around my truck and the canopy side windows. Extremely dark at night to the point that you CAN NOT see out on dark roadways. I don't drive my truck that often so it hasn't really become any huge issue. You have to be very cautious though and aware of your surroundings haha. During the daytime, basically looks like you have sunglasses on looking out from the inside. My trucks the same as the above post... YOU CANNOT SEE INSIDE IT PERIOD which is illegal.
I'd suggest doing 20% in the front... it'll match up on the outside, the rear window looking out will be a tad lighter shade but only noticeable from inside. I personally liked it when I had my truck that way, made backing up around corners easier... To answer your question though.. 20% in the front with 35% over the factory tint will match up completely perfect.

This really does no good without pictures, but I had my DC done with 20% all the way around a year ago. The back is pretty dark now...the shop estimated about 9%. I've noticed no problems seeing out of the back at night.

I have studied and tried to learn as much about tint as possible lately. If you want to tint the fronts to match the rears its between a 15%-20% so theres no perfect match. I have Solargard HP32 which has a VLT% of 35 on my avalon and it metered out at 27%. Still pretty light. Thats on the factory glass. My wifes Honda pilot which alreay had OEM dark tint on the back half to way to light for us. It metered out at 25% I wanted the rear darker and the fronts a bit darker. We went with solargard HP 32 over the OEM dark rear tint and it metered at 9%. To me it isnt that hard to see out of night. The we had solargard supreme 28 put on the 2 fronts and it metered out at 20%. It looks pretty good. Yes the fronts are lighter but it all blends in very well. If you are going to tint over factory tint I wouldnt have anything lower than 35% applied. Thank goodness my installed had that light meter because now I have a gauge on how dark a certain % is. Go to the following web site and click on all the toyota pictures. I am sure he has a picture of your truck somewhere. I used it for a refreence point. He uses LLUMAR ATR film and says what % next to the picture.
