Re: A/C Question, compare to another Tacoma owner hopefully
Does your or anybody elses A/C compressor moan real loud after it kicks on? I took my 08 V6 to the dealer yesterday and they said "it works as designed" (I see a pattern forming). You can hear it from 10 feet away outside and inside you can hear it over the radio.
The shop foreman said they are using a different kind of compressor that is operated by a screw drive and the noise is normal. They also said they compaired it to three other vehicles on the lot and they all did the same thing. So I am on my way now to test drive those vehicles myself.
Re: A/C Question, compare to another Tacoma owner hopefully
Mine cycles every 12-15 seconds also. Can here it over the radio. Its very annoying! I think I read also Toyota went to Delco A/C's in the new Tacoma's. My 2000 never had a problem and blew cool all the damn time. I loved that A/C. My mom has a Lexus RS 350. They have the same engine as the Tacoma. Her last vehicle was another Toyota. Her Lexus does the same thing as my 2005. And like my last vehicle, her other one had a much better A/C also. I was thinking of tearing out the Delco and go with another brand!
Re: A/C Question, compare to another Tacoma owner hopefully
I took mine out over the weekend for a 30mi trip into town and had recirc off temp set not on coldest but dial pointing due west. I listened and could hear the compressor cycle occasionally. Not every 15-20 seconds, more like 45 seconds at idle. Humidity was not bad at my location so moderate amount of water from evap draining out.
Thought.. isn't there a calibration procedure for the control head? Maybe the dealer has to do this but if the blend door stepper motors are not calibrated how can the a/c function properly. I know they "say" there is no problem, sometimes you have to go back to basics to fix something that isn't necessarily broken, but rather slightly amiss.. My .02

I am wondering if anyone has actually checked their truck while idling to see how often is cycles. Like I said, mine is every 10-15 seconds.
This happens regardless of how warm it is outside, how warm the truck is, and RPM range (brake torqueing at 2500rpm and it still happens).
I would really like to know the exact same result from another truck.
Thanks again
I just checked mine for you. It's an '07 V6, SR5, Access Cab, 4x4, with HD towing package and a little over 30,000 miles on the odo.
Idling under the carport with the outside temp at about 80°F the compressor cyles on for about 15 seconds and then off for about 10. The compressor is so quiet that you have to watch the clutch to see what it's doing.
With the AC set on full cold, recirc, upper vents, and fan on the second click the temp of the air coming from my left dash vent is about 47°F. In the worst FL heat and humidity you cannot keep it on max for long without getting goose bumps. I hope this helps.
Re: A/C Question, compare to another Tacoma owner hopefully
Thanks again for all the help, wow! Everyone's description is about the same as mine so I guess that is just characteristic of the system. I just must not have paid attention to it before. It has 116,000 miles on it. Othen than small quirks it has been a good truck. I had a transmission rear seal fixed and u joints replaced. Other than some maintenance, that is about it.
Re: A/C Question, compare to another Tacoma owner hopefully
how long to get cold? is that 47 degrees after idling for a while? seems mine only gets "cold" (haven't taken temps yet, but will) when i'm on the highway for 5 min or more. this after 3-4 mins of side street driving.
if it's 80 out, and you're parked in the sun, how long before it blows 45-50 degrees? i have been suspicious about my A/C since the end of last summer, but havn't thought much of it until i read this thread. also, i don't notice the compressor cycling, except for the initial "on". will do some research (IR thermom. & listen for comp) and post back tomorrow.

It takes awhile if the cab's hot from sitting in the sun. My wife has the truck today so I'll have to check tomorrow or the next day.
Re: A/C Question, compare to another Tacoma owner hopefully
I wish you luck on getting the A/C issue resolved. I haven't had those problems yet. I wrap all of my vehicle's low pressure lines w/ this insulation.
I installed it all the way to the compressor.

The Denso compressors on the pre-Tacoma trucks also cycle on and off about every 20 seconds so that behavior is normal. It's also normal for the air coming out the left and right hand dash vents to be 3-6 degrees warmer than the center vent.
The higher noise level of the GM compressors used on the Tacomas doesn't surprize me since GM engines are coarser and louder sounding too.
In my experience, you can expect a GM compressor to seize at between 100,000-150,000 miles vs 479,700 miles and still running strong in the case of my 1992 Denso compressor.
If Toyota offered a Tacoma with no GM parts for a $2,000 price premium then I'd enthusiastically pay the price !!
Re: A/C Question, compare to another Tacoma owner hopefully
I checked and it takes about 5 minutes on recirc to get the outlet air below 50 on a hot day with the truck in the sun. Thats with me venting the cab first.

I second that one! I am considering keeping my '05 Tacoma for a really long time and all those GM crap parts in it are one of the main reasons that makes me uncomfortable. If it was all Toyota/Denso I wouldn't think twice about it. I bought two used Toyota's with over 100 K miles and had fewer problems than most of my new GM products!
