TacomaGeneral discussion forum for the 2005 and later Toyota Tacoma.
This is a discussion thread titled "Major A/C problems - looking for advice..", within the Tacoma forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
Have major A/C problems with my 05 Tacoma Sport. Late last fall A/C stopped working. Figured it needed a recharge, so I left it till the spring. Had it recharged in April. Worked good for 3 weeks. Stopped cooling. Took it in, Tech looks at it with the UV light. Condenser had a leak AND the compressor seal was gone and leaking! Price to fix...$3000 !!! For a 3 year truck with 73K miles, $3K is a little much. Owned 7 Toyota trucks, 4 with A/C and never had a problem like this. So my questions are;
Do I have a case to get Toyota to cover the parts? Is going with a salvaged compressor a bad idea? Anyone else had major A/C issues? Thanks in advance.
It never hurts to ask if there is anyway Toyota will cover parts. However, unless you have an extended warranty you are most likely on your own, as you are way over the mileage limit.
If you can get no assistance from Toyota I would try a local shop that does A/C repair. They hopefully would be much cheaper than the dealership.
Toyota will give a 12 month, 12,000 mile warranty if they do the work and use Toyota parts. Local shops may have a warranty on repair that is comparable. I would check around before I spent that much.

I have a 2005 d-cab with only 19,700 miles on it. My warrenty ran out in Dec. 07 and my A/C went out in May. Went to Toyota dealership and they wanted $2400 to fix it, got them down to $1125 and a free oil change.
For $3000, I can get my HVAC license buy a vacuum pump and get the compressor,condenser, and dryer and still have at least $1500 left over after I do it myself.

Go to Toyota and find out what the price of a compressor & condenser cost then have someone else install it that will give you some sort of warranty. It helps to really get to know your parts guy at Toyota. I have a really good relationship with my parts guy so when I go to buy parts, he usually gives me 15-20% off which helps these days.
I had to buy a compressor, condenser & evaporator for my older 1990 4x4 V6 that I used to have and it didn't run me $800. Not sure why they quoted you so much.
wow i work at a dealer and i cant remember ever seeing a/c repair that high ? where is the compresser leaking? i bet it only needs the condenser and a recharge?
Update. Truck is in having the AC work done today. Toyota agreed to pay 1/2 as a "goodwill" gesture. I did research the price for the compresser and condensor and the best I could do was $14-1500 for "toyota" parts. The list price for the compresser was around $1100 and the condensor was around $850 IIRC. Still pricey, but what isn't today. Thanks for the replies.
