TacomaGeneral discussion forum for the 2005 and later Toyota Tacoma.
This is a discussion thread titled "Any paint issues on newer Tacomas?", within the Tacoma forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
I've read many of the past posts on paint chip issues with the 2005 Tacomas; how are some of the 07's and 08's doing? It's looking like either a new silver or a black DC is going to be available in the setup I want. I like the black color very much the best; the black paint on my last Tacoma held up well for over 11 years, but if the chips are still a big issue I might go silver. I'm in northern new england and drive a lot in snow/road salt etc. thanks for your input.
My 08 DC 4x4 will scratch/scuff at the drop of a hat! This is the only complaint I really have with the vehicle. When one spends $30k plus on a vehicle, it should come with a quality paint job.
I've actually had mine back to the dealer four times now for scratches or scuffs to the paint/clearcoat. The last time in the buttwipes washed it off for me without asking and scratched the hood on the scoop. I was able to get the scratches rubbed out enough to where they aren't as visible as they were. I'll never let the dealer wash this truck again. I learned the hard way I guess.
So in closing, the water based paint on my 08 blows!

The paint on the frame is an issue too. I and many others have reported unusually high amounts of frame rust compared to the 01-04 Tacomas and compared to any other truck on the road. If I were getting a new Tacoma today, I would definitely have the underbody rustproofed.
I have an '07 DoubleCab Tacoma and not only paint chips are my issue, but ALSO small dents! I have lots of them on the roof (how could someone have more than 20 dents on their roof? Im thinking bad quality material) and some more all over one side of my bed's outside quarter panel. By the way I never hit stuff, never let something drop on my roof (stupd) and never let someone lay back on my Taco's body...
I have an '06 DC, in indigo ink blue with a clear coat added, it has scratches all over. It's my only real complaint also. It scratches easier than any other car I've owned. Most of the scratches I have no idea where they are from - people brushing up against it in parking lots maybe?
Has anyone found a good technique for removing these scratches? Regular car wax is not enough here.
Well, I picked up a new black 08 on Saturday; it was the only one available with the options I wanted. We'll see how it holds up! Arrival time for an 09 silver was too uncertain and I can't keep paying for a rental.
Yep My 08 tacoma indy blue paint sucks. rock chips all over the hood and drivers side and alot of micro chips along the front part of the rear fender just infront of the stick on transparent protector, must of had complaints already since thats already on there. Never been off road. Terrible paint., also i have been talking to other friends with toyotas in general., and they have complains as well. I want a recall or someting 45000$ truck and crap paint., thats CRAP.
Welcome to auto paint in the 2000's. The paint on Toyota's is no worse than any other manufacturer. I had a Nissan Altima prior to this and it was even worse. You could scratch it with a fingernail.

I'm guessing the clear coat on my silver '05 scratches just as easily as the darker colors, but since it is silver you can't see them. I also have not had very many chips and overall I am happy with the paint on my truck. Now I am glad that dark blue was not available when I shopped, because that was my first choice and it would have shown every scratch.
My 06 Camry's paint sucks as well. It seems it has a new scratch on it every day. My Tacoma came with a couple of small dings on the hood that I didn't notice until after i first washed it. the dealer is going to have the dent works guy fix them. I traded in a 99 Durango for the Tacoma and the paint on that was very high quality.
