This is a discussion thread titled "A few nagging issues on my 08 Tacoma", within the Tacoma forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
Hey everyone, I purchased a new 08 V6 dbl cab long bed in early march. I have just over 3,000 miles on it, and I have a few nagging issues I would like to vet out.
1. Every time I come to a stop sign after running at highway speeds, the truck (after being stopped for a few seconds) jumps like someone bumped me from behind. I have read about this a few times, but did not see a resolution.
2. When accelerating hard from a start, I hear the exhaust ticking, sounds like from the manifold. This is not too noticeable when taking off normal, but always noticeable when accelerating hard. Any thoughts?
3. Major vibration in steering wheel. I have already worked with the dealer, and they simply rotated the tires. I have the factory bridgestone tires on the truck. The issue is VERY hard to duplicate, it's different under certain temps, road conditions, and wind. At times, the steering wheel almost shakes out of my hand, at others it's almost perfect. I have adjusted the tire pressure up and down, no help. Any thoughts? Are these tires junk?
4. Paint on all plastic pieces. I have a white truck, and you can actually see thousands of small black particles in the paint, almost like the color is speckled. The metal seems to be fine, but fenders and bumpers are all weird looking. Any ideas?
On a more positive note, the gas mileage is actually pretty good. I have seen as low as 18.8, and as good as 20.4. I'm pretty impressed.
Regarding (1), search this forum and Toyota Nation for "lurch" or "lurching." You'll find lots to read.
I'm in the "keep the brake pedal firmly planted on the firewall when you're stopped" camp. I've felt it want to lunge forward, but it has never actually moved the truck because I hold the brake hard when I'm stopped.

Thanks everyone!

1. Auto tranny thing covered before
2. These motors tick. normal.
3. OEM tires are junk, but that shouldn't be the reason for vibe if balance, pressure, and installation is correct.
4. Never noticed, maybe a white paint thing.

Actually.. it took quite a bit of searching to find a reason that's actually plausible.
It appears this truck will stay in 2nd gear when you stop. If you're stopped for a long enough period of time the transmission will shift down into 1st causing slight torque spike when the converter engages causing the lurch if you're not firmly on the brake pedal.
I just read this in some post and I haven't confirmed it for sure, but it makes enough sense to me that I'm going to stop caring about it again
the lurch has to do with the A/C compressor kicking in & out. i have only ever felt this phenomenom when i either the air on or defrost. turn off your HVAC completely and see if it still does it.

Still does it with everything off. Actually the first time I experienced it my HVAC system was completely off.
From what I have read the A/C compressor theory was a common misconception BUT does apparently amplify the lurch.
Thanks for all the great info. I have experienced it with my AC on and off. Any additional thought about the poor paint on the plastic parts? Also, what kind of MPG are you guys getting?
Ahhh, a repost of your previous thread from April regarding the tire vibration issue. Based on my comments in that thread, you should realize the tires aren't the issue...although some tires are better than others at handling flat spots after sitting for awhile. It's a problem with the design of the truck. Did you try my suggestion in accelerating slowly onto the freeway compared to accelerating fast and seeing the difference? Did you talk to the dealership about the TSB for this issue?
Comment to Jasonoff: What you said the first time was correct. Not an A/C issue but having the A/C on does accentuate the small push at a stop.

Moose,
I apologize, I did not see your post about the TSB, for some reason I did not get a notification about the post. I went back and read your original post, and you stated that you feel it is a tire problem, because after your third set of tires your issue went completely away. I'm having a very difficult time putting my finger on the exact issue, as it happens on some days, and some days it's perfect. I never notice the issue during acceleration (slow or fast), but always notice the issue at exactly 65mph. I used to have the issue only when the tires were cold, but now it happens on a 100 degree day after driving 40 miles. I read the TSB, and will consider talking to my dealer about it, but the dealer always says that my year is not listed in the TSB. I also will take the advice of another member, and take the truck to a tire store (maybe discount tire). I appreciate your help and welcome any additional comments.
Thanks,
Matthew

Please keep me posted, as most of these issues are mentioned all over these forums. Do you see the rear leaf spring TSB much? I had that done a few months ago and it made a big difference under a load. Thanks for the post.
