As to gas theft -- we are supposed to have a grid (or screen or something) built into the filler tube to prevent siphoning...

We do. I have been buying a few extra gallons and putting them in Jerry Cans and filling up with them during the week. The hose always hits something in the filler neck (which I assume is the screen)

That's right, siphoning is not an option. However some of us wanted locking gas caps just so "junk" isn't poured down the tube by vandals.

Toyota dealerships do sell a locking gas cap for the Tacoma. That's where I bought mine. However it's not listed in the book for it for some reason. If the parts guys are knowledgable, they'll know which one it is. Identical to the one below and for the same price.

At least you guys can buy one for the Tacoma. The 2007-08 Tundra still doesn't have one that will keep the check engine light from comin on.

Try this one. It looks like a dealer item, #C0170-00020.

I have a Stant, part number given by Imjin. NO CEL has come on in the 3 years I've had it.

As to siphoning, thieves are just taking a cordless drill to the bottom of the tank and stealing the gas that way. Much quicker that way. One can only hope for a spark to toast those pricks.

My first thought was, no way! Then I wondered why I was even surprised.

And they'll likely get away with it. While gasoline vapors (in the right ratio) are explosive, liquid gasoline will not burn.

Maybe they'll be dumb enough to smoke during the procedure...

Ever see the sparks thrown off by the brushes in battery-powered tools? I'm sure they'll ignite the vapors once there's a hole in the tank.

$80 worth of fuel or a $20k+ vehicle? I'd rather have them siphon the damned gas than blow up my truck.
