TacomaGeneral discussion forum for the 2005 and later Toyota Tacoma.
This is a discussion thread titled "My 08 Tacoma is smoking blue....", within the Tacoma forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
The puff of blue smoke at start up will NOT cause oil consumption. You will NOT have to add oil between changes.
However, to be on the safe side, take a still shot or a video of the blue smoke and show it to the dealer and keep the service receipt that proves you reported the condition to the dealer early in the truck's life. Then if the condition ever gets worse, you have proof it developed during the time the vehicle was under warranty and proof the dealer did nothing.
There's a 95% change the condition will not get worse and may get better over time as the other owners have noted. And less than a 5% chance an assembly line goof up at the engine manufacturing plant is the root cause of the puff of smoke.
Did you ever have to add oil to your truck between oil changes?
Never.

Hey everyone,
I have an 08 Tacoma with the V6 in it. The truck has about 4,000 miles on it. Today my wife was backing my truck out of the garage and I was standing behind the truck when she started it (first start of the day). I noticed when the truck started that it puffed a cloud of blue smoke from the tail pipe (like my 76 ford used to!!). Now I'm no mechanic, but I can't imagine this is ok?? The smoke was surely motor oil, as it had the normal smell.
Any thoughts? Should I worry about this?
Thanks,
Matthew
I have seen mine do this, but only if I move the truck in the driveway and the truck is cold. In other words, when I do drive it and it gets hot (operating temp.), and then park, then crank after several days, I don't see it.
If the truck sits idle for a few days, I don't see the smoke if the last time I turned the engine off at operating temp. If the engine is cold, and I move it in the driveway (runs for only 45 secs.) and shut it off, the next time I crank it I see a puff like you are talking about.....

Thanks for your thoughts. I have been watching the truck for the past few days and it has not done it again. I'll pay more attention to my use patterns. In the end I'm not too worried, as I'm covered by the warranty I purchased.

The puff of blue smoke at start up will NOT cause oil consumption. You will NOT have to add oil between changes.
Well, that's a contradiction because the blue smoke IS oil consumption. Granted, in a small puff at startup it's very minute, but in cases of worn valve stem seals or a faulty engine build, it can cause noticable oil consumption.
A little puff of blue smoke is nothing to worry about, but if you notice occassional blue smoke when the engine is under load, you probably have piston rings that didn't seat properly. A leakdown test will find issues and is much more reliable than a compression test if you continue to experience this issue.
If you're paranoid, follow your wife to a freeway on-ramp and have her mash the gas (with the engine at normal op. temp.) to let the engine rev up to redline on upshifts (normal for autos with the pedal to the floor). Watch the exhaust for smoke. You'll most likely only see steam though.
Mine did this when it was new, for the first couple thousand miles then it went away....

I've watched my exhaust many times on start-up on my 05 Tacoma and have never seen any smoke. I never do short start-ups and shutdowns, so if that is part of the equation then I've never put it through that mode. I do 5000 mile oil changes since I'm running Mobil 1, and the level goes down maybe 1 or 2 mm on the dipstick ... hardly any oil usage at all. My engine seems to be pretty tight and runs really good -- can't complain at all.
Sounds like a hair line crack in the block. My buddy's truck did the same thing and ended up taking it to Toyota. They looked it over but found nothing. So he went on his way. Needless to say the engine about 2 weeks later seized up on him and he was left with a really nice truck with no engine!
Wow all that from one puff of smoke?
