This is a discussion thread titled "My 08 Tacoma is smoking blue....", within the Tacoma forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
Hey everyone,
I have an 08 Tacoma with the V6 in it. The truck has about 4,000 miles on it. Today my wife was backing my truck out of the garage and I was standing behind the truck when she started it (first start of the day). I noticed when the truck started that it puffed a cloud of blue smoke from the tail pipe (like my 76 ford used to!!). Now I'm no mechanic, but I can't imagine this is ok?? The smoke was surely motor oil, as it had the normal smell.
Any thoughts? Should I worry about this?
Thanks,
Matthew

Reason: spelling
at 4000 miles one would think that it is broken in and everything has seated (valves & rings) correctly. I would guess that a drop or two of oil has slipped through the valves and that is where your puff of smoke came from. If it continues to happen I would do a wet compresson test on it. Was the vehicle sitting for a couple days before the wife started it up?

No, the truck has not been sitting, was just used last night. I guess I will take it to my friendly dealer (:Grin) if the problem continues. I don't think it's going to hurt anything, just frustrating to know my brand new truck might be burning oil!
My '05 did it once (in the first year), dealer dismissed it as a fluke, and I haven't noticed it again. Others have reported the same. If you see it often, it's time to talk with your dealer. Otherwise, I wouldn't be concerned.
Prior to going to dealer, see if you can't document the condition with some photos or video. Also, bring your receipts for completed scheduled maintenance. (oil changes)
Toyota was pretty slow to acknowledge bad engines in other models late 90's (until a class action suit) Not saying that this will be the case in your situation, but best to show you mean business and get them to take it seriously. A truck of your age and mileage still under warranty shouldn't be burning any oil if it has been maintained properly.
Sounds like a hair line crack in the block. My buddy's truck did the same thing and ended up taking it to Toyota. They looked it over but found nothing. So he went on his way. Needless to say the engine about 2 weeks later seized up on him and he was left with a really nice truck with no engine!

whoa..... slow the the truck down....... This condition has been around for a long time..... had the same problem with my 1991 Celica. Brought it to the dealer and after many calls to tech support and gyrations at the dealership the answer was: normal. Apparently there is a miniscule amount of oil the gets into the chambers and actually assists in reducing ring scuffing at startup..... sometime it's a bit more than usual.....you just happened to be standing at place to actually see it. I had 180K + miles on the Celica when I sold it. My 1997 and 2000 Avalons did it and my 2006 does it. That being said. If you have a lot of smoke every time at start up it's likely more serious and should be checked. Otherwise have the dealer check it for your peace of mind. Just my 2 cents worth.
Just keep an eye on it. Like others have said, if it keeps up, bring it in. You're under warranty so no worries.

So now you have psychic abilities? You must be joking only, I know you aren't since you pull this same crap on every other Tacoma forum. You really have no idea what you're talking about here so scaring this guy is ridiculous.

I agree with the wait and see folks. Keep your eye on it and check your oil religiously. If it keeps doing it or uses oil take it in and get it documented. You have a lot of warranty left so just drive it. And if you do your own oil changes keep good records.
That being said I'm betting it's just a fluke and will go away entirely as the engine gets broken in more. A 4000 mile engine is still quite new.
Hey everyone, thanks for the good info. It's interesting to know that other trucks and cars from Toyota have been know to smoke upon startup. I have always been taught that when an engine starts smoking it's time for a rebuild, but that was back in the 80's and 90's.
I had the oil changed for the first time by the dealer at 2500 miles, and I also purchased the 6 year 100,000 warranty from Troy on this forum. I really have nothing to worry about, it's just kind of a bummer to know that your brand new truck might possibly be burning oil. I'll keep a watch on the fluids and keep it documented.
I'll put my 2 cents worth in since I've had mine for a long time now (over 3 1/2 years). Mine has done it periodically over the years. I do recall it happened more frequently in the first year and haven't seen it happen in a long time. That first year I put on approx 20K miles, so it should continue for a while. Normal, normal, normal.

Did you ever have to add oil to your truck between oil changes?
