TacomaGeneral discussion forum for the 2005 and later Toyota Tacoma.
This is a discussion thread titled "Tacoma Tire Choices Opinions", within the Tacoma forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
I have an '05 V-6 4x4 extra cab Sport Tacoma. The crap OEM 17" tires are just about worn out now (34 K miles), so I can finally put on some decent tires. I have read a lot of opinions on the web and I have almost narrowed my choice down to either Michelin Cross Terrains or Bridgestone Revos. I don't do any serious off roading, but I do get off the pavement a bit and I drive in some nasty snow sometimes in the winter. I put about 50 miles a day round trip commuting, about 1/2 of that on the freeway.
I like the Michelin's because people report that they wear really well and that they are quiet and ride well too. The Revos get the best reviews of just about any tire I have ever seen, and if I spent more time off road they would be an easy pick.
So what do you guys think? Is one of these a clearly better choice? Is there another tire I am overlooking.
I run the Toyo A/T's and love them. I do hear good things about the Revo's also. The most important item is to keep them rotated that will make them last and keep them from cupping. Sipping is another thing that I really like living in Seattle and driving on wet roads you really do notice a difference.

Corban and SR5Mike... How many miles have you put on them and how many miles do you expect to get of them? Is the onroad performance on par with either of the OEM All Seasons?
Thanks!

For your limited off-road use, the Michelins sound better. As an H/T tire, it will last longer, quieter, less rolling resistance (maybe better mpg) as it less chunky than the A/T Revo. Have you been stuck with the crappy B grade H/T's yet?
Obviously, untracked snow and off road the REVo is better, but guess you gotta figure where you spend 99% your time.
Either way will be as step ahead the OEM's...
Personally I'm going with the Kumho APT's or Toyo OC H/T as my 17's are done by the end of the year.

I have about 10k on them I rotate them every 5k (each oil change). They still look like new. Mileage wise 40k and I would be happy. I don’t like to push my tires to the wear indicators. I got 30k out of the stock BFG’s (junk) another 30k out of some BFG A/T’s (junk). So far the Toyo’s are better on the street and as quiet as the original rugged trails.

If you're considering the Revo's (great tire), also consider the Firestone Destination A/T's. I've had them on for about 5K miles and they've been perfect. Great in any condition. Check out Tirerack.com and you'll see them rated #2 for A/T tires.

As an fyi, I love the wet performance of the Revos on my older Grand Cherokee, but they are wearing out nearly twice as quickly as my Michelin LTX A/Ts did on the same Jeep.
Also, since you are considering Michelin Cross Terrains (looks just like a highway tread to me), how about Michelin's new LTX A/T2? Slightly more open tread than Cross Terrains but less aggressive appearance than Revos -- might be worth a look.
Finally, for you guys running Toyo A/Ts (one of my top choices for replacement soon), are you running P-rated or LT?
I have been also considering the Michelin LTX, pretty much for the same reason you mentioned Splicer. I also have wanted to see what other people had good experiences with and will check out the Toyo, Firestone and Kumh tires. 17 inch tires are a big investment these days and I don't want to screw up.
I have Bridgestone Revo. I wouldn't recommend them for you. They were great in snow the first winter but after 24,000 miles (40,000 km) they are wore out. Bridgestone is going to prorate them 50% for me.
I do 90% pavement 10% off road but was hoping to have a tire that was good for snow too.
There are actually two versions of the Revo. Mine are the cheaper of the two so I'll assume that's why others are getting better wear from them.
If they'll let me I'm going to try the Dueler A/T D695 or Firestone Destination A/T.
My Toyo's are 285/75/16 and they just passed 36000 miles. I expect they will go at least to 70000 as they are about half warn now and most tires wear quicker on the first half of the tread. I am diligent about the 5000 mile rotation and they are wearing very evenly. I wouldn't know the comparison to the stock rugged trails as I only put 62 miles on them. One think I do know is that when everyone is fishtailing and sliding off the road in the snow, I can maintain freeway speeds in 2wd and when all the idiots hit the brakes on the ice, I've never had any trouble getting stopped well before them. (unlike some of the other tires I've had experience with)
I have the Revo's. Good tire, albeit noisy with a rougher ride, but I go offroad less often and Michelin LTX M/S will replace my Revo's. The CrossTerrain is a pavement tire IMO. I wouldn't be using them in snow and ice. If I lived in snow and ice territory I'd probably get a set of seasonal snow tires or Nokian WR's I could run year round.
I decided to try the new Michelin LTX A/T2 265/75x16 on my 01 Taco Pre Runner 2WD. I have already put 10,000 on the tires and they show no wear, are fairly quiet, no balance problems and improved the handling of my truck. I'm impressed with the new ATX A/2 and would recommend them to anyone. You can save $60 on a set of 4 tires at Costco.
