Just got back from test driving the 09' Tacoma. I love what they have done with the backup camera, it is not activated until the truck is placed in reverse, and then abra cadabra the picture is activated in the left hand portion of the main rear view mirror. Slicker than frozen hogsnot on a greased log!
Is a backup camera required on all trucks by the Feds ... or is this just something Toyota decided to do?
Not required yet, but rear cameras are one of the options automakers have to comply with the new law. Here's a snippet from Edmonds.com on the new law:
Rear visibility. The U.S. Department of Transportation must establish a standard within three years to provide drivers with ways to detect a person, including a small child, behind a vehicle. This could be done with additional mirrors, sensor devices, cameras or other technology and may differ by vehicle. All vehicles must be in compliance within four years of the rule's enactment. Presumably, automakers could meet whatever standard is developed either by changing vehicle design, adding technology such as cameras and sensors, or both.

So....do we expect the price will go up or down for installing backup cameras in the aftermarket? Will we finally get more choice and some installation options which are easier to install? The current available camera/LCD screen choices are expensive and not all that simple to install.

Yup, I also just test drove the '09 Tacoma and the camera is awesome on the rear view mirror, except now the tailgate is not lockable. (If I recall). In addition, I comes with side curtain airbags.
I've seen many 'wireless' backup camera that mount on the license plate frame for around $100. Not too bad... Not as slick as built in to the mirror though.
I am buying a new 09 Tacoma and was very dissapointed to find out that the rear view mirror that has the LED screen built into it costs over $600. The rest of the system, the camera in the tail gate, and all the wiring are built into all the 09 trucks, but they only install the LED screen mirror in a few of them. I was going to buy the mirror, but at that price no way. It's over half the price of getting the entire SR5 package. I am having a heck of a time finding a stick shift, white truck, with SR5, in my area. I can have a full back up camera package installed by another company for lots less money, that will be much better. I love toyota trucks, they last forever, but boy are some aspects a rip.

I don't think it's a rip. You're paying for the system integration, design, as well as materials costs, which is probably a fairly limited run item.
It sure is nice to be able back up to a trailer which i just did again tonight. Not to mention that the led reverse lights are plenty bright for the camera to function.

Gentex makes the cameras (correction - mirrors) for Toyota. You can buy an aftermarket mirror that will plug into the existing wiring on many '09s for less than you can get it from Toyota. The Gentex 50-GENK352TAC3 is sold on ebay.

Reason: correction
and on another forum was a post with pics how a guy just ordered the 09 tailgate handle ( about $70) and Pioneer ND-BC2 Camera ~ $170 from e-bay
and did it himself
he used the monitor from a backup camera on a license plate he had tried but lacked good depth perception

To each his own, I guess.
you got to be kidding Lol Toyota sur chargers a hell of a lot of money on this stuff there navigation system is outdated and lame and aftermarket is the way to go for feartures. Sadly i don't think Toyota has gotten the clue on there audio system either esp with this. I don't see Navi even being a factory option on the Tacoma yet Toyota give you bits and peices of something and provide the back up camera in the mirror vs a Navigation screen.Sadly Toyota feel's since Tacoma is low budget many people don't retain the features found in the Tundra Line up think again..

No Eclispe makes the rear view camara's for Toyota and Gentex makes the mirror housing.. Eclipse (Fujitsu Ten) makes the headunits for Toyota Navigation but Toyota is often very Late buying into the Tech aspect on this stuff feature wise.

Not so schweet IMHO. I've got the '09 with the camera, and quite honestly I can't find much use for it. I'm used to looking back anyway, but when I look in the rear view at the display, everything is distorted due to the "fisheye" look and I have to turn my head and look out the back window. I had backup sensors on an F150 one time, and I liked that MUCH better. If I use this thing to see how far I am from a post, another car etc. I'm afraid I'll back into it.
