TacomaGeneral discussion forum for the 2005 and later Toyota Tacoma.
This is a discussion thread titled "What should I do about this? I'm PO'd", within the Tacoma forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
Had an oil changed done by a local Dealership yesterday. Paid for it and drove home ( roughly 3 kms ) . Today I was driving the truck all day. Most of the day I could smell something burning. I thought that one of the techs ( if you could call them that ) spilt some oil on the exhaust etc. So no big deal. After driving for about 1-2 hours I thought that and residiual oil would have burnt away. I pulled over popped the hood and noticed that Toyota left a coffee cup under the hood to catch the oil as it dripped when removing the oil filter.
See attached phots.
What do you thin I should do? I am going to talk to the dealership Monday as they were not opened today. I am lucky the truck didnt burn to the ground. I drove the whole day with my 7 yr old and 12yrs old in the vehicle
BTW there is about 1/2 inch of oil in the bottom of the cup and oil drips all over my driveway
Kindly mention it to them. Maybe the next oil change will be free. Mistakes happen, but at least the filter is snug and the crankcase is full (I hoped you've checked). I gotta admit, if they didn't make good on something I'd take it elsewhere for service. They should at least clean up any mess and toss in a free oil change.
Agree with canddmeyer. If not out of the way I would go talk to the service advisor (manager). Take your photos with you and the coffee mug. Take photos of your driveway and the oil spots. Keep your cool. If you don't get satisfactory results, then go talk to the dealership manager. If still no results, complain to Toyota and never visit the dealership again for anything. A few free olf or tuneups would not be out of the question.

I used a soda can once, and forgot to take it out and ended up with the same effect... clean it up and move on with life. Is it really worth the hassle of going back and arguing with someone?
Why?? Did the original poster lose out on something like money or time?? What are his losses??
It's a fire hazard...
Sometimes the "what could have happened" can result in free $hit
Plus the time it took to remove it from the engine bay and walk it over to the garbage. Then all that extra weight in the garbage come time to put the bag out on the side of the road
Shawnd2-- It was Jacksons Toyota in Barrie not Sunrise. I have never had my Truck serviced there.
I talked to the Service Manager today via phone. I left him a voice mail and he caled back within 5 minutes. He has agreed to clean the oil from my driveway. Thats about it. Hasn't even apologized.
For the record the coffee cup does look like it was smoldering. Its charred. I am confident that if I drove the truck any longer I would be looking for a new truck.
The reason I asked was I bought my 1996 Toyota from Jackson's in Barrie. Dave (the service manager at Sunrise used to work at Jackson's as assistant manager). I thought my dad said he was back at Jackon's now as manager.
After bringing in my 96 to Jackson's 37 times in the first year (14 times was for them to try and fix the heater) I stopped going and found a dealer closer to home (Orangeville) and they fixed the issue the first time. (Broken heater door)
Dave, and Jackson's Toyota constantly showed there incompetence over the years (even when I just needed to purchase parts), my dad lives in Horeshoe Valley so I used to work on my truck at his house alot. They even did the spring TSB on my 96 and put one 4 leaf pack, and one 3 leaf pack.
I know this was all along time ago, and I'm sure not all their work is bad, but I've been much happier not dealing with Jackson's (or Sunrise by association).
Who's the Service Manager at Jackson's? The Dave I dealt with was Dave Griffin (or something like that).
Not worth the hassel. Clean it up and use this as a lesson to do you own basic maintence yourself. For what it takes to take the truck to the dealer and the money you waste you could of bought better oil and change it yourself and save the difference.
