TacomaGeneral discussion forum for the 2005 and later Toyota Tacoma.
This is a discussion thread titled "V-8 Tacoma?", within the Tacoma forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
I know that the probability of Toyota offering a V-8 in the Tacoma is probably slim at this point in time, but I recently found out that GM will be offering their 5.3L V-8 in the Chevy Colorado/ GMC Canyon for 09 which puts out 300hp. This boosts power well above the Tacoma's current V-6.
A while ago on both GMC's and Chevy's website, they said it would appear in 08, if not 09 models. This has since been removed on their website - so I think it was axed due to gas prices. As perfect as the 4.7 may be for the larger Tacoma, I highly doubt Toyota will do this - Toyota just shut down Tundra production in Indiana, and I don't think putting a v8 in any of their new products is in their best interest.

I'd take a Supercharched 4.0 any day over a 5.3 Chevy. The Supercharger will put out slighty better performance numbers than the 5.3 and better MPG's when your not using all 304 HP. I think the 4.0 is going to prove itself as one heck of a reliable engine.

There have only been a couple 4.7 swaps to Tacomas that are mentioned on the various forums...there's a sick desert build on SCT, and TRD did one for SEMA. I'm sure there are others out there, I know a few older Yota truggies with 4.7s...

So? I don't see how this has any bearing on the Tacoma, especially considering that the Dakota has long had a V8. Besides, this is just another stupid move by GM. Talk about bad timing...why not put a more powerful V6 in the Colorado/Canyon?

in my latest issue of Petersens 4WOff Road, there is an actual article saying that GM is going into production with the V8 in the Colorados/ Canyons for 09 or 10....can not recall

GM cancelling the V8 in their small trucks has no bearing on the Tacoma. The sudden surge in gas prices, however, has. Like I said - Toyota just axed production of the hyped up Tundra at their Indiana plant - that's a fairly big deal. If they did that, I highly doubt they'll go through much trouble putting a V8 in the Tacoma since overall industry truck sales are down nearly 50%. Very few people would buy it these days.
Toyota could take the compact/mid size truck segment by storm, IMO, if they throw in an ultra efficient 4 banger turbo diesel, and a heavier duty 6 cyl turbo diesel.

Not sure what this has to do with what I said. I'm responding to the OP, obviously, who is comparing a V8 Colorado/Canyon to the Tacoma V6.
And what do you mean "sudden surge in gas prices"? They've been "suddenly surging" since 2001. Doesn't seem too sudden, does it? Matter of fact, how about the sudden DROP in gas prices with oil down $28/barrel in 3 weeks?
Many of us have been saying for the longest time, give us the 3.0L D-4D.
