TacomaGeneral discussion forum for the 2005 and later Toyota Tacoma.
This is a discussion thread titled "MPG of Canadian vs US models???", within the Tacoma forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
City/Highway fuel consumption rating of a 2009 Automatic, 4x4, Double Cab, Toyota Tacoma as per www.toyota.ca:
21/28 miles/British gallon
City/Highway fuel consumption rating of a 2009 Automatic, 4x4, Double Cab, Toyota Tacoma as per www.toyota.com:
16/20 miles/US gallon X 1.2 US gallons/British gallon = 19.2/24 miles/British gallon
WHY THE DISCREPANCY BETWEEN FUEL CONSUMPTION RATINGS OF US AND CANADIAN MODELS?????
The following are (2) possible theories (not yet researched nor confirmed) that I could come up with:
1) Differences between the Government of Canada’s approved criteria and testing method and the EPA's
2) More stringent pollution control laws in the US leading to additional emissions control equipment that ironically reduce fuel economy
I know that in the early 80's, Canada used the same emissions standards as California. I remember my 1980 Rx7 owner's manual mentioned that California and Canada were different than the other States (except maybe New York) and that the emissions equipment was the same for the two. Don't know if that's still the case. I also don't know if there is any impact on MPGs. I don't think that was the case. If I remember correctly, it just reduced Horsepower and Torque.
Also, I'm not so sure that California is the only State using the "California" emissions. I thought there were other states requiring the same equipment (I think New York in the early 80s required the same emissions control equipment as California and Canada...possibly per the owner's manual??? Can't remember where I saw that.).

Well my 2003 Tundra has 245hp while California models have 240hp and the rest of USA had 245 so I doubt california and Canada are the same.
Like I said, that was back with my 1980 model. I'm sure California has become even more stringent since then...likely more so than Canada.
