Default Canadian buyer, US truck. Savings?

I've been shopping around for a full-load tacoma, and finding that the pricing differences between US and Canadian trucks aren't as much as they might have been a few months ago. Probably due to a stronger US dollar, as well as price drops at Toyota Canada, in recognition that many consumers were buying south of the border.

I've priced a CDN truck at my local dealershipanada at a total of $41,500, after all taxes, freight, and PDI.

A broker has found me a US truck pretty much the same for $4000 less, after all the taxes and import.

I've looked into doing the import myself, from a dealership just over the border, and for the minimal differences in price, it looks as if it is going to be just as worthwhile to have the broker do the deal.

Looking for input on whether $4000 is enough savings to buy the US truck over a Canadian one. What do you think?

I'm surprised there is so little difference. When I bought mine I paid 25,588 CND plus GST/PST and $200 RIV fee. The RIV fee is the only import fee you have to pay and mine is a 4x4 TRD Offroad.
When I was looking (I bought 2 cars a Tacoma and an Altima) my cut-off point was a $5000.00 difference. Anything less I would buy it in Canada. There are some benefits like no issues crossing the border (I didn't have any but you never know plus I took years off my life worrying about it!) financing, KM speedometer and warranty (Toyota honours the warranty and I've had my truck in several times, but again you never know Toyota could one day say that they no longer honour the warranty) and perhaps better resale and trade-in, although I doubt that there would be a difference.
In my opinion $4000 it is not worth it, not that it's not alot of money, just not worth the risk.

Although I would double check prices as your US price of $37500.00 seems quite high. Even the MSRP is around $30,000 US and I found US dealers are much more willing to deal.

Hope I helped.

Shawn

A buddy in Toronto saved some money buying a Hyundai in Buffalo, only to get a letter a few weeks later telling him Hyundai Canada would no longer honour the warranty. Now, any warranty work is a day away and a hotel stay overnight...

If you check the APA website (www.apa.ca) they state who honours warranty. As far as I know Hyundai has never honoured warranty on imported vehicles. Toyota however was sued back in the early 90's for doing the same (although it was for not honouring warranty when a Canadian vehicle was brought to the States). Although they admited no wrong they settled out of court for something like $30,000,000.. Since then warranty has been honoured.
Honda also does not honour waaranty, but for the saving's most people think it's worth it or they can purchase a afternarket warranty.
In my case my Tacoma is covered, however even if it wasn't the $13000.00 I saved could sure buy alot of repairs.
But as the original poster stated, if the saving's are only $4000.00 as I stated above in my mind it is not worth the risk.
