TacomaGeneral discussion forum for the 2005 and later Toyota Tacoma.
This is a discussion thread titled "09 Pre-Runner MPG", within the Tacoma forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
I'm considering a Regular cab Tacoma to replace my recently sold Tundra & I'm looking at both the Pre-Runner 4 cylinder, manual trans or Std version with same engine and trans. Toyota specs the MPG at 20/26 for both even though their quite a bit different in weight, height & gear ratios. What is the real world MPG for these two?, especially the Pre-Runner which I would like to have although don't want to pay a penalty on. I would love in Timberland Green although apparently Toyota does not off this color in a Pre-Runner....

No one knows what their gas mileage is on a 4cyl Pre-Runner?
Thanks for the info,
I need to act fast on this with very few out there, none available in my region so I have to drive 700 miles to purchase.

EPA Hwy MPG is based on average 48 MPH test.
At this speed:
1. There's not significant air drag difference between a 2WD and PreRunner. PreRunner and 4WD have front skid plate/air dam but not 2WD
2. 5th gear may be lugging due to lower rearend (2WD)
However, for optimum MPG or high speed driving. You should see better MPG with 2WD due to weight, tire size and gearing.

I feel the Pre-runner would be stretched to get the marked MPG so unless i hear something different I'm going to go with a new Timberland Green 2WD basic on Monday. It's a shame I'll have to replace rear gears in order to put normal sized tires on the truck though.........!

In my eyes the Tacoma Basic reg cab come with pathetically undersized tires and once you install something more appropriate, you have to install a new R&P to get things back in line.

I'm not talking about something huge, just perhaps a 235/70/15, something to fill up the wheelwells a bit. The factory size tires seem so small. Then install a 3:58 R&P to compensate for the taller tire to get RPMS back to as stock.
