TacomaGeneral discussion forum for the 2005 and later Toyota Tacoma.
This is a discussion thread titled "Funny noise from front end.", within the Tacoma forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
I've noticed this for a while now but thought it might go away. It hasn't! In the mornings, or even after the truck has been sitting for a few hours, whenever it is put in gear and starts moving forward I hear this weird extended "scrape" type noise for a second or two then it goes away. It almost sounds like either the brakes rubbing or maybe even the rim rubbing on something. I can't tell if it's coming from the right or left side. I figured it may be due to applying the brakes to shift from park into drive and the brakes grabbing.
Anyone else hear this?
I'm going to make an appointment at the dealer and have it checked out but I'm betting, like usual, they won't hear anything.
do you notice it while slightly turning when you start rolling from a stop? I have a similar issue, dealer can't duplicate it and it is getting worse. I only notice it when the truck has sat over night or all day.

Sounds like the noise the brakes make when the ABS does a check (I think) every time the truck is started up and moved for the first time. Do a search and see if you can find any past discussions.
i asked about this a while back, until now i thought i was the only one. i've had this since day one, i took it back to dealer several times, could not re-create, i confirmed the the left side output shaft was very loose and wobbled lots coming out of the front diff, it also had signs of leakage. i showed the dealer, dealer raised truck on lift and had it on drive, we could clearly see that the diff. was spinning the cv joint and could wobble. we were convinced that this was the problem, so they swapped out the diff. STILL THE SAME!, i have not been able to take it back to the dealer. but this happens when it has been sitting for a couple of hours and i take off from stand still slightly turning wheels to the left...very difficult to re-create to the right. i need a solution too. very frustrating because i work with toyota and can't seem to have the dealer fix it. grrr. my next step is to, finally, raise the truck after sitting for a while and spin the wheel, maybe it's the bearings...

Could it be something to do with the rotors? Maybe some components are rubbing? What about the spring clip? Just trying to throw ideas out there without having heard the sound.

i plan to check this weekend, i havn't tried investigating further than just visual because i didn't want the dealer to point fingers at me for "tampering" with it...besides, the dealer should be responsible to fix what they sell. anyway, with that said, based on my experiences with this issue and the dealer, i have no faith in them.
I posted this exact same question a month or so ago and people told me there was a service bulletin on the air intake apparently it is not completely sealed like it should be. I noticed mine right after I had taken the air intake off to change my spark plugs. It sounded like I had rubbing in my brakes or my tires were rubbing on plastic. I just moved my air intake around where it connects into the sidewall to make sure it was completely connected and the noise went away. It is coming back, but not as bad. If your truck is under 36,000 miles you can have it fixed for free, but mine is over so I will live with it.
The noise I'm talking about in the original post is certainly NOT air intake related. I'm hearing a metallic scrape type noise that comes from the lower portion of the truck somewhere. It sounds as if something is scraping against a rotor or drum then releasing.

Mine sounded like a brake rubbing or a tire rubbing on something. It sounded like it came from under the truck and would start and stop especially when the engine reved a little, I noticed it happened when the truck was stopped, I never would have thought it was the intake, but it was not a metallic scrape.
Mine is now "fixed". When the dealer changed the differential fluid, they didn't add quite enough additive to the differential. The noise was generated from the cluthches in the rear LSD differential and it sounded like it was coming from the front end. It was slow to develop, that is why i didn't connect the dots. (IM me if you want to know how I guessed the problem)I had the dealer add a little more additive and that cleared my problem up. I hope this helps.
