TacomaGeneral discussion forum for the 2005 and later Toyota Tacoma.
This is a discussion thread titled "MPG deciding factor", within the Tacoma forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
I'm currently in the market for a Tacoma.. looking at the '08 because its the end of the year and cheaper. I'm undecided between the 4L Access Cab 4X2 PreRunner or the V6 crew cab 4X2 PreRunner. What do you currently own and what is the gas mileage you get? I live half a mile away from the freeway, and my work is maybe another mile off the freeway, so wouldn't really be driving city.
I drive a Double Cab 4x2 PreRunner, and I'm getting 22mpg right now, mixed. You really see a difference every oil change, when you need it, your mileage goes down a lot... anyways, city I'm getting +-17mpg and highway +-25mpg @70/75mph
If you're concerned about fuel economy, have a look at the 4 cylinder access cab models. we've gotten close to 26 MPG on our first few half tanks of mostly highway driving between Lake Tahoe and Auburn. Acceleration is fine except perhaps on the steepest hills.
Of course, if this is going to be a working vehicle carrying lots of stuff, you might want the V6.
When I was researching the purchase of a new truck, mileage came up.
I only drive 11k miles a year, so mileage didn't rank high on my list as a deciding factor.
I did the math, and there was only a $300 a year difference in the trucks I was looking at(strictly mileage).
If I was that worried about mileage; which I'm not, I'd have picked up a civic.
FWIW V6 auto 4x4 my average mpg's per tank in order from vehicle purchase: 17.4, 18.8, 19.2, 19.7, 18.9. I had some work done on the truck and hope that last tank was from other test driving.
If gas milage is a concern, Id avoid a Doublecab V6 and instead be looking for a 4-banger Accesscab or regular cab.

90% of all Ford, GM and Dodge trucks are still on the road today. The other 10% actually made in home...

I drive a Double Cab long bed 4x2 with the V6 and 5sp auto tranny. I had been getting 20mpg consistently with all city driving. I have since added bigger tires and I am still waiting to see what that does, if anything, to my mileage.
I've consistently gotten 20-21mpg hwy; City has dropped to 17. Towing seems to drop it quickly. Overall for a daily commuter, these trucks have excellent mpg.

IMHO there isn't enough difference in MPG between the 6 and 4 for it to be a deciding factor.
One catch. Since the 6 is faster, you might have your foot in it more and the mileage will suffer.
I have an 05 Prerunner 2.7 5 spd. I get, on average, about 22 mpg combined. I've gotten as high as 26 highway and as low as 16 city. I have never seen the rated 28 mpg. (I have 66k on it now)
Many of the people here claim about the same for their 6.
If you intend to tow a trailer, then keep in mind that the 4 is only acceptable to about 2000#. Yes, you will hear stories of towing huge amounts across the country without any problems. I tow an Aliner and the 2.7 does quite good (17-20 mpg towing!). But I'm down to third, in with the big trucks on steep grades. So, I don't think it would be fun to go past 2000 lbs.
If the 6 is in your budget, that is what I would do. If you are trying to keep the price down as much as possible then the 2.7 5spd is the way to go.
when i first bought it i was lucky to get 16 mpg
for some odd reason, now at about 13k miles, i hit mid 18's,
80% highway, 20% city
coming from a old 14 mpg truck, my new truck is awsome
the only thing i dislike is the fact that my rear wheels squeel everytime i turn, and it's turning raidus sux...
I bought a 2003 Tacoma 4-door with a 6 cylinder and automatic trans. I also bought the service package and extended warranty. So the truck was fully serviced.I bought the 4wd mainly for skiing in the sierras not for off roading. The worst road it's ever seen was a gravel road down in Death Valley. It threw a rod at 76,000 miles. There was hardly any knocking. It started as a ticking at a stoplight two blocks from my work.As I drove those two blocks it got steadily worse, and by the time I parked at work it was knocking and idling rough. The oil light never came on all other gauges read normal.I have always babied this truck, still do. My brothers say I drive like an old lady.
Anyway, I hope this helps, toyotas aren't all that!
