TacomaGeneral discussion forum for the 2005 and later Toyota Tacoma.
This is a discussion thread titled "tire question for DC TRD Sport owners", within the Tacoma forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
Unsure of what's available to you US drivers, but for us Canucks, 17" tire choices are limited to tires in 4-ply and 10-ply. I'm looking for a 80% highway 20% off-road tire that rides nicely, but takes some #$%^ and abuse, and I'm wondering if any of you can offer input on the ride quality/smoothness of a 10-ply tire on this light truck. Probably will go with a Toyo, a Yokohama, or a BFG; all popular choices around here. Having ridden a 10 ply on the old school Tacoma, I noticed they rode somewhat like tractor tires on that light truck. thoughts?

Payload of a 4x4 TRD Sport is only about 1000-1200 lbs depending on cab config. No point in 10 ply tires. Regular P passenger rated should be fine, cheaper, should ride better on & off road due to normal air pressure, and also its softer rubber will grip better in winter.

BFG All Terrains come in 265-70-17 in load range C. These are one size bigger than stock. I don't know why they would not be available in Canada. That's what I'd go with.
Check 1010tires.com, you can choose the Canadian site.
I don't recommend buying from them but at least you can get an idea of what is available. Their prices are high.
You should also check TireRack.com in the US. For me buying from them is about the same price as buying locally even with shipping. Overall it would cost a little more because tire prices locally usually include installation.
Don't limit yourself to 265/65R17. Check 265/70R17 and 245/70R17 also.
I got the Yokohama Geolander H-T/S G-S01 or something like that. It's the highway ones. I love them. Good luck

I should have mentioned that the tires I am looking at are also called 'E' load rating tires. It seems that in the 17" size that I am looking at (265 70R17), all of the LT tires are 10 ply or 'E' rating. Is that what you folks are running?
