TacomaGeneral discussion forum for the 2005 and later Toyota Tacoma.
This is a discussion thread titled "5-Speed Tranny Noise", within the Tacoma forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
I've got an '06 5-speed Tacoma 4x4. Recently, as the truck decels from cruising speed (unloads), the tranny makes a loud gear noise. As a comparison, it sounds like a tranny that's running with no gear oil - I'm using Amsoil. Any ideas..?
For those interested... Here is the result to my initial question to the forum. It wasn't related to the transmission, but rather the differential - and a TSB has been issued (TSB-0076-08). I've attached the TSB bulletin as a .pdd file.

I got a good chuckle out of that. So, their solution is to overhaul the diff. Knowing that's not going to make a darn bit of difference and that it's still going to be noisy, they insulate the cab more so you won't hear it...LOL.

There are Tacomas out there with differentials which whine at H/W speeds, My 09 did at 53-60MPH and Rear Diff. was replaced per TSB-0076-08 yesterday which eliminated the noise. I believe the transmission noise is a separate issue. My transmission whines and rattles and is my next item to approach dealer with. I'm not sure if there exists a TSB for this but there should be in my eyes.

Oddly enough, my truck's diff only whines - more like growls, on decel between 75 to 65 MPH. The noise is worse on a hot day (thinner oil) and coasting down hill (negative pressure on the driveline). I've got a Stealership appointment next Wednesday (10/8) to prove my case. Believe me, the tech ain't getting out of the truck until he hears the noise - even if I have to drive across state lines.
I have tranny problems too, but they're related to hard shifting. At one point I thought that Toyota would issue a clutch replacement TSB - no dice. A friend of mine got so tired of his shifting problems, he had an off-road garage replace his clutch. To his surprise, when talking to the mechanic, found out that Toyota issued a new part number for the clutch assembly - and in a comparision... the new assembly was beefier looking than the original. He has since had NO problems shifting after the replacement.
Mine shifts reasonbly well although whines badly and you can hear clattering coming from trans when going over bumps. Lets us know how you make out w/ dealer. I'm going to try Redline MT90 and see if things improve.

Will do... All of my drivetrain components needing oil have synthetic Amsoil 90-140 in them. My tranny still shifts hard, and I suspect I'll have to wait until 'I' replace the clutch to feel a difference. Toyota (up to the CEO) has been no help working this issue with me...

I'm wondering if Redline 75w90NS or 75w140NS might be a better application here....

Looks like the TSB only applies to 2 wheel drive manual and auto tranny trucks, and also 4 wheel drive manual tranny trucks. Is that how others here read it?
Does anyone know what the "VDS(s): NX22N, NX62N, PX42N" called out in the TSB refer to?
my question is... how did you change the tranny oil if you have a 5 speed auto tranny? it's a sealed unit... I've been wanting to replace it but no luck

The procedure is in the factory shop manual. I think someone has posted that section on the forum. Do a search and you'll probably find it.
