Default Is it difficult to install a lift kit?

Just saw a Tacoma with a lift kit, and I like it. Want to put one on my 08. Is this something a do-it-yourselfer can handle.

thanks

What kind of lift was it? If you are mechanically inclined you should be able to install a lift yourself. The only one that is of big concern is the ones that require cutting your cross member to drop the differential and steering rack. If you are not comfortable on cutting your cross member then, you should pay someone else to do it or have someone who knows what they are doing help you out.

Have no idea what kind of lift kit it was. Just started looking around on the net and am amazed at the different types. I am somewhat mechanically inclined, so I think I can do it. What kits are recommended?

  • Suspension lifts: There's spacer lifts that fit inside and outside the coilover assembly. However, I'd only recommend the ones that fit inside the coil pack. Lift springs and adjustable coilover.
  • Cradle lifts
  • body lifts

For the suspension and cradle lifts, the rear end will either be lifted with an AAL (adding and additional leaf into the stock leaf pack), lift blocks or a complete replacement of the leaf pack.

The cost of a mild lift to a wild lift will range from $100 to $2500+(at least and it goes up from here and it never stops ).

now my next question. Are they worth it? Just spoke to a mechanic and he doesnt like them. For the benefit, there's a lot of disadvantages and other issues to deal with, like brake lines, gas lines, extra stress on the suspension and CV joints. He recommended against them, and said he has installed quite a few of them.

Whats everyone's opinion?

Any lift modification to the suspension is going to increase the wear and tear on parts. You can go with a 2.5" lift up front and a 1.5" lift in the rear without any issues for the life of the truck. However, some had had CV boots busting and leaking grease or having to replace ball joints more often than not.

That's the chance you take when modifying your vehicle.

As far as gas lines, I do not see how any of the suspensions mods would affect the gas lines.
