TacomaGeneral discussion forum for the 2005 and later Toyota Tacoma.
This is a discussion thread titled "Do I Buy The Extended Warranty With 33k On It?", within the Tacoma forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
I have an 08 Dbl Cab 4WD Taco and have 33k on the odo. I contacted the dealer today and they want $1900 to extend the warranty for 84 months or 100k. So the real question is do I need it? I figure that I will drive around 45k this year, which means I should use up the new (if purchased) warranty next year. Do I need it? I drive 50/50 Hwy and City and am pretty easy on it most of the time. Do not have time to do real off roading but get in 4WD maybe once a month. Any advice is helpful, thanks in advance.
Re: Do I Buy The Extended Warranty With 33k On It?
I dislike extended warranties, especially for products with a reputation for high quality -- such as your Tundra. You are buying an insurance policy for $1900 for something that is not likely to require $1900 in repairs over the term of the policy.
I would keep the cash in my pocket and continue to do the routine oil changes and other services as required, and repair anything that may need it.

Sorry, my mistake, that's what you posted alright -- guess I had looked at your 'My Garage' info .
Anyway, no, my answer remains unchanged. We purchased a 2005 Tacoma, first model year of the new design, and I passed on the extended warranty. Your 2008 has the benefit of three additional years development and 'de-bugging'. I think you're pretty safe without it.
Incidentally (and you may be aware of this), dealers often promote extended warranties because they are a great source of income for them. IMHO, if they were losing money on these deals, they would not be so anxious for people to buy them.
Re: Do I Buy The Extended Warranty With 33k On It?
I always do the extended warranty now, I have had probably 6 different warranty works on my tundra all used because i got the extended warranty.
If i didnt have it i would be probably $10k under now.
Re: Do I Buy The Extended Warranty With 33k On It?
It's a gamble. I bought my 05 within one month when the redesigned trucks came out and didn't get an extended warranty. Almost 4 years later and 60K+ miles, haven't needed it once. So far, my gamble has paid off. However, if I had been one of those whose A/C compressors seized, then I'd regret my decision. Just something to think about.
Also, consider what people report as far as problems on the forums. Discount things like breaks because they're not covered anyway. Discount most of the TSBs because if you haven't experienced the problems so far, then you're not likely to experience them at all. What does that leave you with? So far the only expensive problems I've heard about is the A/C compressor. That's about it. So, do you want to purchase an extended warranty just for that at $1,500-2,000? And if you purchased the extended warranty, would that really even be covered (you know they like to exclude almost everything). Don't forget too that your powertrain warranty continues on for some time, so we're not talking engine or transmission here.

Re: Do I Buy The Extended Warranty With 33k On It?
First off thanks to all for the response! I am so surprised that TOG can sale them at that price. Is this a genuine Toyota warranty, or like one of these guys that keep calling and mailing me? On the other side of this, I have 4 Toyota's 08 Taco Dbl Cab 4wd, 08 Camry, 07 Taco Reg Cab, 06 Tundra Reg Cab. With all these vehicles to service does that change anything for the one that I drive the most? I agree it seem that most problems are actually small and at times could give me the opportunity to upgrade hardware, but his whole thing is so draining. These guys must make a ton off us! From $1900 that was quoted to $800 from TOG. What gives?
Re: Do I Buy The Extended Warranty With 33k On It?
yes they make a ton when you pay 1900 for a warranty then down the road have say your Tranny warranted or even the power steering rack and ... look you saved a lot of money.
Re: Do I Buy The Extended Warranty With 33k On It?
That is true -- like any other insurance policy, it's no more than a crapshoot. There are some instances where it pays off, but the odds are not in your favor.
If I buy an extended warranty for every vehicle I purchase in my lifetime, I'll be out a large pile of cash. If I pay out-of-pocket for repairs on one or two vehicles, I am still money ahead, and by a significant amount.
Incidentally, I am nearing retirement age and have owned several vehicles. I have neither purchased nor needed an extended warranty.
As with anything, it is a personal choice and what's right for one person may not be right for the next. I would rather pay for something if it breaks instead of paying whether it breaks or not.
