Default Auto Limited Slip

I am looking at a new 2008 prerunner. I know it comes with the automatic limited slip. Anyone have an opinion on how effective this is? I live on a dirt road that can get a little slippery at times. I am wondering if this system offsets the inherit lack of traction on a rear drive pickup with an empty bed.

Actually AUTO-LSD is only standard on 2009's. Here where it gets confusing, better double check exactly what you have on your 08. The VSC/TRAC/AUto-LSD was an option, but overall very rare on any 05-08. TRD sports and some SR5 pgks have a mechanical LSD instead. It works good on gravel roads. I'm sure the auto-lsd works too, but you gotta toggle button to engage it.

OK thanks for the information. I have not bought the truck yet I am still shopping. So there is a good chance an '08 Prerunner will not have any kind of traction aid?

Well couple ways to find out. First, dont listen to the saleman.

If its an 08, V6 I assume (all 4cyl are all open diffs)
TRD Sport- Mech LSD
TRD Off-road- Locker
SR5- depends on option package. Most are open diff. But it could have either a mech LSD or Auto-lsd option

If you dont have the original sticker, there a way to find out.

IF Mech LSD look at rear axle pumkin, will have a little white sticker on it "LSD", and is bigger diameter than than other Tacoma's w/o.
If Auto-LSD look at lower left dash with 6 pack of buttons. If one says "Auto-LSD" or 'VSC" (I can't rememeber) then it has it.

I called the salesman and he said it had traction control. I think he is full of crap.

I have a 09 and suggest you read the owner's manual as there's a signifigant amount of material there explaining the operation of the Auto LSD. I have not tried mine yet although when the snow comes, I'll give it a whirl.

I have the Mech-LSD on my '06 Sport. It works great, when you do... say u-turns on the road you can hear it locking per the tire sound on the pavement. It works great off road as well with an empty bed. As for TC, they do come with it, I opted to go without for obvious reasons
