like OMG...... if you are worried about frame rust......don't look at the underside of your paper thin rear bumper.....

i look forward to the day when my truck body has rusted away and all that is left is the "composite" bed.....i will just chop and extend my steering wheel and pedals and I'll be good to go another 60k mile til my front diff rattles my fillings out

My 05 frame started out like yours, with a few spots of rust after one winter. By now, after 4 winters, it is completely covered in rust. I've painted it over with Rustoleum, but that isn't really a solution. My opinion is that, like the 95-00 frames that Toyota now admits weren't given the proper rust protection at the factory, the 05+ frames likewise don't have the proper protection either. I notice in my area (the northeast) Fords, Chevys and Dodges that are even older than my truck and their frames are just fine. Even old Tundras are fine. But on every 05 Tacoma I spot on the road, I check, and there's rust. I've complained to the dealer and Toyota about this, and so should you, but the response I got is that the warranty only covers total rust through, not surface rust. But like you, I am concerned because my plan was to keep the truck for a long time. It's only surface rust now, but it's only a matter of time before the truck won't be able to pass inspection because of the rust.
I have the same problem with my 2005. New chrome rear bumper was replaced today by the dealer at no cost because the chrome had already started to rust when I bought it in '05 & it got much worse. They cleaned and sprayed out the steel support section also.

My frame has a good amount of surface rust especially at all the mount points. Like the earlier models (2001 - 2004), I expect my frame to be replaced at some point up the road.
